My three things for AVPoHP will be more like a critique 'cos I think you have some good ideas that aren't being utilized.
1) I like the idea of a college student protagonist starting off already suffering because of everyday misfortune and whatnot, before the weird misfortunes come into play. It's a good way to establish sympathy for the protagonist. The problem is, the first two chapters make said protagonist look like a total narcissist, and by the end of chapter 1 I already hate him. Chapter 2 is even more self-indulgent prattling, mostly about himself, which makes me hate him even more. I feel like this story would already benefit from being told in third person rather than first, and letting me get to know him by how he reacts to his misfortunes. I read a half-dozen chapters, but only two chapters in I already couldn't stand being inside his head.
2) The whole "superhero - military peace corps" thing that he did with his mom and dad is an awesome idea for a story. I'd much rather be reading about that. It could even take place in a topical setting, like the current crisis in Gaza.
3) The chapters are short, which makes it easy to get some light reading in on a busy schedule.
As a side-note, using hyphens instead of quotations for dialogue makes it kind of confusing to read. You could just italicize your dialogue instead if it's meant to be over the phone.
Also, another side-note, if Hiro means "generous", maybe that should be the family surname given their penchant for helping others in conflict zones. Or the protag's name could be Hiro instead of Thomas. No point bringing it up if it's his middle name.
Overall, you have some fun ideas here, but it feels like you're opting for a typical anime scenario that tapas subsribers would like, instead of focusing on the strongest points on offer: potentially sympathetic protagonist who grows up in heavy conflict zones because of a superhero-military family situation. That alone has a ton of storytelling potential and I'd love to see it fleshed out. Compared to that, I couldn't care less about anything involving a roommate he acquires in college years afterward.
Hope that helps.
You'll have to PM me your hopes, 'cos now I'm curious. xD
