Hey y'all! I know a bunch of people here on Tapastic have thoughts about doing a Kickstarter campaign. There's tons of info out there on what a good Kickstarter needs, but not about what comes before all that - the preparation.

Since Team K and I are in the phases just before launch I thought I'd include some of the tips and tricks we've learned. So here’s a list of 6 concepts we’ve found helpful on the way to our own Kickstarter, launching May 11th!1

Here's a preview (because I really don't wanna flood the board). The rest is here.9

1. ESTABLISH YOUR AUDIENCE FIRST
From day one, every person we’ve talked to brought up Kickstarter. “Why don’t you do a kickstarter?” Well, there were a lot of reasons, but one of the biggest was this: We were focused on establishing our own audience and fanbase. By building a fanbase we had time to experiment and try methods of creating and releasing our product. We studied the analytics to figure out just who our audience was, when they were reading and why.

Having an established audience not only means you have more eyes on your work when it launches, it helps you know who exactly is going to back your kickstarter. By tracking age range, locations, and when folks come to your website you’ve got vital tools to help you get farther in planning your campaign. You’ll know where to expand your marketing, when to release information, and have solid relationships with fans who are already passionate about the work you make. The best part about establishing your audience and fanbase first? You have built in “evangelists,” who are excited and invested in your success!

2. TAP INTO THE MATRIX

We love to make comics, but outside of organizing panel layouts we weren’t very good at organizing. Thankfully, our friend Rebecca showed us what was holding us back from being better workers - ourselves. Rebecca taught us a lot of methods to help us stay organized beyond the mounting To Do lists. One of the best tricks she put us onto was the Decision Matrix.

The Decision Matrix is a chart that helps you sort out your priorities from what’s important, what’s not, and what are really distractions disguised as tasks. It’s graph, separated into quadrants of what’s important and urgent, and it’s a great way to stay on task especially for visual thinkers.

By putting different parts of the list in their proper quadrants we figured out what was important and what could wait. This meant we got to smash the big scary stuff out of the way quickly and slept much better at night.
