Hey!
First time I post something in this forum , so yaaay!!
I have some trouble falling asleep and I stay up working or just procrastinating.
So a few months ago I was doodling in my little handbook, while watching some YouTube videos and podcast's. I drew a series of little monsters that were supposed to be really cute, but also a parasite. I thought it was an interesting idea for a monster. it lures you in with its cute little face and that takes over your body, but it was still a cute monster and it would just pop out of the poor host's body and control it... you know 3am thoughts XD,,,,
The first few where created with basic shapes, but soon after they just... kinda spiraled out of control and all kinds of crazy was released on those little guys.
In the midst of all these one stood out. he was still a basic shape, an hexagon wit 2 little arms and legs, 2 big eyes and an even bigger smile. He looked like a crystal. But soon after i drew him 4am rolled around and i was finally tired enough so i could go to bed and not remain there for an hour staring at the ceiling just waiting for tomorrow.
(btw i don't recommend doing this, sleep deprivation is bad for you... so sleep the recommended 8 hours a day).
A few days latter, i had finished that handbook, and was now revisiting what i had done. I found that same set of characters, had a little chuckle over the idea (still thinking it is a good one) and stopped at that same hexagon creature. He just looked interesting. I set down the handbook and went on with my day...
Now have you ever had a thought that leads to other ones and that those ones lead to other ones and so fourth? I guess you could call it day dreaming, it just doesn't stop you from doing other stuff... I spent all day thinking of that monster, and just couldn't get him of my mind.
I got it in my head that he was an alien from the MOON! and so when i got some time i picked up a pencil, a piece of paper and started to draw him, on the moon, just kinking a rock just having fun. by himself. Having done that i was satisfied and whent on with my day, looking for an internship or some freelance work (I'm a communication designer btw).
The next day that little itch was back. I wanted to draw him again. I didn't have mush stopping me, so i did, now an astronaut was with him. and over a period of 2 weeks I started to draw what was to become the first episode of the series.
I had read a couple of comic books before, not many, i was always a cartoon kinda guy. But the story just seamed to write itself. every time I ended one of the drawings, i already knew what was going to happen on the next one.
At this time he was still one of those parasite monsters and i had an idea - what if instead of taking over peoples bodies he took over objects?.(forgive me if I'm wrong i didn't really fact check this XD) He would reproduce almost like bacteria, kinda, he wouldn't divide himself, just multiply. So he would draw his face on an object and it would come to life, as another one of those creatures. Eventualy they would become crystal creatures like the first one.
I now had an idea of what to do, so the next step was to show it to the world.
For this I was going to do a guerrilla like publicity stunt. I was going to spread some real life models of the creature around the city, I bought 6 sheets of 70x100 sheets of craft paper (not that expensive actually) designed a model of the creature and started to make them.
At this time I had started to treat this as an actual project. I didn't really know what i was doing, but it was fun and that was all that mattered. The project had a name, and it was called " Pojecto Munheco" (Im Portuguese and Munheco was what parents use to call toys. in Portuguese action figures, dolls and things of the sort are called Bonecos, you can see the resemblance).
It was a placeholder name because i hadn't figured out a name for the parasite.
I call an old friend of mine and explain the project to him over some coffee. I wanted an small catchy name, something that sounded nice. after a few not so great suggestions a good one came up "Lun" It is another play on words, in poruguese we call the moon "lua" and the beings tat would come from there "seres lunares" - Lunar beings - now the creature being form the moon,... that made sense.
Shortly after this, another friend of mine posted on facebook that she was organizing an event fot the company she is working with and needed artists to publish/show something. I volunteered the publicity stunt i had in mind, and she accepted.
The models where palm size and not that hard to do, just tedious. and by the time the event was taking place i had made 50 Luns, finished and created a a6 comic book with the first episode. a hastily made podium/column to put the comic book on, and a couple of different lun versions to offer to those who had made it possible.
The day of the gallery was a mess, I had set up the installation in the morning, so i recruited a friend of mine to help me set the lun invasion up, The models didn't stay up so we had to figure out a way to make them.
All that so a total amount of 10-20 people could see it and go away.
Now, you would think that would have sucked, (and it did XD) but it gave me the will to keep going, the few people that saw the comic book liked it. and up to this point i had never felt so validated in my life. I had never really put that much of an effort in to anything and have to actually have a good reaction.
That got me to think " Well... people seem to like it, i liked making it, and wanna keep making more".
I rushed home and immediately googled for places to publish stuff. i was looking for local bookshops, online platforms, ANYTHING!!!!
And that is when i found Tapastic and started to publish my episodes.
I have to say that it has been a really nice journey so far. It has allowed me to evolve and learn some interesting stuff from what i see.
The community is generally regarded as nice. I'm still waiting for the bad comments.
I'm still pretty small on views and subscribers, but i don't really know the in's and outs of this thing.
Also the process of creating the comic can be a bit harder that I expected manly due to the ever present wish to make it beautiful and interesting. I have now experienced a new kind of joy, the one that is provided when a random person who doesn't know you and doesn't have any kind of obligation to, decides to leave a comment telling you how much they like what you have done. I makes me feel like all the effort i put in to Lun... validated.
And at the end of the day that is what I want to feel.and do.
So here is my heart felt thank you to Tapatic and to the community, When i started writhing the post i wanted to make something smaller but it just kind of kept pouring out.
Yeahh... it's kinda long XD
So ahhh. Thank you and i wanna know if you wanna share your story feel free to do so, I will read it
So If you are interested in the Project, check out the comic Lun
Also the second series is there so I can expose some experiences and interesting stuff that is relevant but outside of the comic. Outer Tag
