Blood began to pound hard against his temples even as his feet were pounding the ground. Arden was going farther away from him with each stride. That boy would have to take on that bloodthirsty monster on his own, Hari thought ruefully.
But then he was built for such stuff and Hari quite wasn’t. He wished he had his hunting bow with him then. Two bolts into the Laichanan’s eyes would put an end to this right away.
Suddenly Hari felt the ground moving from under him, sliding away and then rushing back towards his face. He realized he had slipped and as he stretched out his arms and took the brunt of the force on his palms, the jolt jarred his entire body.
And when he looked up, everything was moving strangely slowly. Sora’s wail filled his ears, he heard Rubia scream and another voice yelling, familiar and yet strange. Arden was falling down before him. No, not falling but sliding down on his knees.
The runner seemed to be flying as he leapt over the sliding Arden. Then the Laichanan filled his vision, its horrible red eyes, bloodshot and insane; wide open maw lined with razor like teeth and that disgustingly lolling tongue.
It howled and came rushing toward him. Hari raised his hands over his head. And just as he braced himself for the inevitable impact and painful collision, the thing swerved and kept running.
