You can change but you have to want to change first. If you want to change then you admit what you did that was wrong. Then you try to make amends. You can't always restore what was lost, but you can apologize and help the person repair things. You must also accept, people may not want to forgive you right away.
characters can certainly change, I had things go a totally different way after I finished my novel compared to how it was as I was writing it because my characters changed.
