- Talk To Me: It just came out and when I went to watch it, I was expecting another campy horror film? but boy was I wrong. The characters are genuinely good and feel like real teenagers and not what a man in his 50s thinks teenagers are like. The protagonist is a genuinely flawed person and it makes the story 10x more interesting and compelling
- A Sixth Sense; An oldie but genuinely good. The protagonist is an actually interesting character and it’s fun to watch him figure out the twist. I’d be surprised if you haven’t seen this already though lol
- Midsommar: A lot of people put it in the same vein as Hereditary, but I think it’s mainly because it has the same director lol. Tho I personally liked Hereditary more, midsommar is still crazy good and Florence Pugh does an amazing job. Literally carried the whole movie tbh. Her character is interesting and well written and portrays someone grieving in a really intriguing way.
- The Babadook: This one definitely has a lot of people on the fence but dang I really liked it for what it was. I think the protagonist is well written and it’s quite the ride watching her character do a complete 180, and it’s 100% understandable too.
- Nope/Any Jordan Peel Film: I say Nope specifically because I love the main characters and their personalities, but honestly Joredan Peel is amazing at writing protagonists and also flipping the narrative and so that’s why I’d recommend any of his films.
- Sinister- A classic. Love this movie. The protagonist is interesting, the twist is fun, and he’s a genuinely flawed guy but a caring dad so it’s intriguing to watch how he handles the events of the movie while trying to do what’s best for his family.
- Train to Busan- This is a Korean film, so you’ll have to bare through subtitles, but wow it’s an awesome watch. The protagonist is terrible. Not in the sense where he’s badly written, because it’s quite the opposite. It’s really fun to get a horror movie with a protagonist who’s genuinely just kind of a sucky person imo. Also made me cry.
I wouldn’t say any of these are protagonists in the way Hereditary represents its protagonists, but in my opinion, they all have entertaining, interesting, and well written ones that can stand on their own.
