I'm still working on finding the balance between details and drawing speed, but one thing I've noticed over time is that despite simplifying some aspects, my drawings have become more complex. In other words, simplifying has giving me time to test and incorporate new stylistic choices.
For example, in my current comic I started using a flat color and cell sharing, all in grayscale. Then, at some point I found it restricted me too much, so I incorporated gradients and brush strokes. But that in turn felt restrictive because it was all gray, so I started incorporating colors. Because coloring takes extra time, I stopped doing line weights, and when I began missing it, I incorporated lineart coloring and some ambient light. That's where I'm now. Might not be the way to go if you're a pro and publishing in print, but it has really worked for me as a learning experience.
