You gotta be good at this combining illustrations thing for it to make sense, but what do we know? XD

But being serious, it's sad that in artist circles people argue what art discipline is art and what isn't like that.

The same can be said about animation. If you look at it that way then portrait artists who paint photo realistic paintings are just wasting their time when they can just take a picture. It all comes down to what you value.

Comics are sequential art, they tell a story through each page, although one illustration can also tell a story it is not sequential. You can combine all your illustrations together and it's not a comic because it's not sequential. It would be completely random at every page turn and you would not call it a comic you would call it a portfolio.

Comics ARE illustrations combined together but they must be sequential otherwise it becomes an art portfolio not a comic.

You can say comics are not special but there are films and animations created from comics. There are professionals who work on creating comics RenieDraws is one of them. So according to my hypothesis I disagree with that quote.

Comics have more in common with film than illustration...

I don't exactly understand their point. It's like saying a pencil sketch is a couple of lines or a painting is a couple of strokes. My Grandmother thinks like this. Comics are about telling a longer form series like a book while having the convenience of an illustration a comic follows the same logic all other art forms do while doing much more.

Well, I suppose it's like telling to a lifelong vegan that bear meat has a very specific taste. They'll ask, "But isn't it just meat? What's so special about it?" They have no idea about the differences in taste when it comes to meat.

In the same vein, I feel that people who haven't read too many comics lack understanding on how different forms of media work(especially in relation to comics). Thus, you could say they're "media-blinded" in a certain way, having positive bias towards traditional medias(TV, books, the likes).

many years ago my Uni art teacher asked me what kind of artist I wanted to be, and I told him I wanted to be a comic artist. He laughed and said 'comic artists aren't real artists...' um..what? needless to say i walked out of the class. Ugh.

Yeah, I've heard that there's a super big bias towards comic artists in general. Just what gives these teachers the right to define what art is? Even today, some people consider the "starving artist" to be the ultimate culmination of artisthood, but... to me, that seems more like cult mentality than an intelligent way to earn a living as an artist.

Summa summarum - others can't define art for you. You have to define art for yourself.

BUT what makes comics special is that those series of images serve to tell a story. Not many people can walk off the street and draw in a sense that tells a story, not to mention hit perfect shots & queues on demand. Even children's books have to be able to convey a whole art action in one page per page...illustrators & comic artists are unique in that aspect that we can put together an image that lends to telling a story.

Of course, it would be unfair to put every single person of the same sack. Obviously it will vary in a case by case basis why people think in that way.

This reminds me of a serious art critic's review of a Roy Lichtenstein (the guy who did the pop art comic art based paintings) retrospective I read. Towards the end he says Lichtenstein would obviously have been an amazing comic artist if he hadn't become a serious painter.

I can't think of any comics that consist of a single hand painted, large scale image on canvas with no sequential content of any kind, but this guy was absolutely serious! Did he think comic artists spend months on every panel? There's not one shred of evidence in his work to say Lichtenstein could have drawn a comic. Snobbery I can understand though I hate it, but when it comes to comics there's just total brain melting cluelessness.
