Good question. There is nothing wrong hoping for popularity, just don't rely on it. I also agree that series with comedy and romance gets popular more easily.
My story has a very serious tone, characters can die and all that. But I'm adamant keeping humor and romance in there as well.
Romance because it can be good character development and humor because it's a good contrast to the depressing parts.
