I got my resident subject matter expert read the first couple of chapters, and she said it was interesting, and I got to see which words gave her trouble & replaced most of them.
She's given me some cool 14 yo insights. One she told me that drafts is not how you catch pneumonia, so, mom, don't confuse children, just say 'cold drafts', okay?
Second, I got a lecture on K-pop idols being forbidden to have drugs, sex and political views that enriched my knowledge of K-pop by about 500% lol.
One that I kept was 'raised his hackles' -- I am still debating it. I think it's a common enough expression?
In the end, I was told that it will pass for YA, but with a bit more complicated words. Because my child is diplomatic, heh.
I am also, again, concerned that the story is too Russian to get people interested.
