To the best of my understanding, depicting images is considered sin in some religions, because the idea is coming against the sin of idolatry.
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth

Notice all it's contextual usage has to do with worshipping an image. Worshipping an idol.
In the modern times, an idol can be a musician, athlete, politician... or even a political or religious ideology. You know you're in Idolatry if the said idol can do no wrong no matter what.
Idolatry is a HEART issue. Not the image itself.
