DISNEY!!!
Man, I will say that back in the day, I was a HUGE Disney kid. I loved the movies I grew up with that were popular at the time, the classic movies (especially the fairy tale-based ones) were always whimsical and charming, and while there were always sometimes movies that did Disney better than Disney, I always end up feeling giddy once seeing the popular and familiar designs of various characters both onscreen and even in other forms, like the Disney Parks. I've long supported Disney because they always had a healthy balance of movies, shows, and even video games that just oozed some of that charm, even if they weren't all perfect hits. Heck, I have loads of Disney stamps, Disney snowglobes, Disney sheets, Disney figurines, Disney/Pixar Toys, Disney & Disney/Pixar videogames (not just Kingdom Hearts, guys. lol). Cartoon Network took over my television back in the day, but Disney always overtook my movies and VHS and DVDs and my clothes.I don't know about you, but I'm a Donald Duck guy, and I'll get my hands on anything Donald Duck related, whether it be games, movies, cartoon DVDs (which I'm surprised aren't on Blu-Ray), or the COMIC BOOKS!!! Disney got me interested into the new Ducktales once I heard Donald was gonna have a major role as he does in the Uncle Scrooge/Donald Duck comics.I always loved Disneyland California, but Disney World is pretty good from what I've seen. There's been some fun Disney TV Cartoons both back then, and one that I really enjoy (that somehow thrives better online) are those new Mickey Mouse cartoons. Man, Paul Rudish was one of the main men on Cartoon Network, and seeing him take on the Mouse Gang just makes my slapstick heart soar. The colors, designs, and fast-paced slapstick antics are something I've missed for so long, and I'm super glad somebody still knows that these kinds of cartoons can still thrive happily today. I've watched EVERY SHORT POSTED. I just wish it catches on before the show eventually comes to an end...
And y'know... like any childhood company, I've had some gripes. For starters, I wish they didn't just drop 2D animation like a hot patty so fast and so soon. Sure, its argued that they use it as a benchmark for their CGI movies, but while that's the case, you watch some of their behind-the-scenes features and you see the 2D used and it looks almost ready to be for movies, or TV! Just clean it up and you got it right there! CGI is nice, but I miss those painstaking handcrafted designs. The characters don't feel as whimsical as they used to be. Heck, in almost every movie up to Tangled (and Wreck-it-Ralph), I wanted to BE in their world! They looked different, they acted different, and they talked funny! I love that! Heck, Pixar does that all the time, and I wanna enter their worlds almost as much as I wanna enter Disney's! I loved how their works were semi-adult enough (not in themes) but much of them acted like.... adults. Nani from Lilo & Stitch, the Evil Godmother, and even Merlin from the Sword in the Stone were all practically adults. Some were wacky or silly, but they were adults nonetheless. But in these newest movies, I... don't feel the same, they all wanna talk just like how I see others talk in the real world. That's not whimsy... that's just.... kinda annoying (It WORKS for some movies, I'll admit. But not all of them...)
Tiana's World (from the Princess & The Frog), Sanfransokyo (Big Hero 6), Winnie The Pooh's (from the 2011 movie), Rapunzel's world (from Tangled), and the LitWak Arcade (Wreck-it-Ralph) are the only few worlds that I wanna jump into in an instant if you gave me the choice to jump into any Disney movie from the recent Second Renaissance Era. The other, more popular ones like Frozen, or even Moana, were like.... nahh.... Then there's recent times when Disney's been more into mocking itself despite those decades of history being thrived and respected without need for trying to pass off like you're the newest of hip kids trying to change the world. Its fine to mock yourself, but you should never forget your history and who you really are. It's a strange era we live in now, and I'm not sure why it exists...
While I haven't been the biggest fan of the newest crop of movies Disney's made aside from a few great hits, I miss when they get experimental, and some of their "popular" TV cartoons either don't catch me like once before, or they just incorporate/misalign/mishandling story styles just for the sake of taking advantage of having DISNEY MONEY and trying to earn brownie points rather than be GOOD STORIES, and the corporate side of things that the company have acted on in recent years is slowly ruining their magic, and some of their handling of brands that they've bought have been a bit... heartbreaking to say the least, as well as cutting down some of projects that they could still bank on today (R.I.P. Disney Interactive), I'll always love what they've brought to the table for us to remember and enjoy, and discuss! (Even for the party-poopers). Disney's Animation Efforts, whether it was their classic hand-drawn works or their burgeoning early 3D CGI affairs, were some of the coolest things ever! (Their live-action stuff was hit-or-miss sometimes, but maybe that's me not fully distinguishing the movies or the Disney Channel... which I believe is a completely other entity that Disney never talks about.)
I'll never stop loving Disney. They still get some things right to be honest, and I've had the inspiration to start drawing in the first place because I watched nonstop Disney movies (even the Direct-to-DVD SEQUELS!!!
Extremely Goofy Movie, anyone?). I may not be able to emulate the classic Disney House Style (whether we're talking about the '90s Renaissance Style, or the Golden Age to Dark-Age style), but I love making my works as swirly, squiggly, rough, scratchy, as those movies and that awesome-looking "Walt Disney" logo.
P.S. SOMEONE PLEASE BRING BACK THE NAME "Disney's" in their products, stop them from making anymore live-action movies when they still market the animated movies their based on, revive some of their underrated properties with 3D releases (like Atlantis, and Treasure Planet), and please..... PLEASE.... bring back Disney Interactive for more whimsical games (there's a lot of games they could make ALONGSIDE licensing their brands to other studios).
Oh, and make a Cold Shadow 2.
And yes... I miss Playhouse Disney.
