Subs do generally grow over time, but it really doesn't harm to give them a little push by doing promo on various social media platforms if you're keen to grow your audience.
Comics that "blow up" it's usually one out of:
- Their work got featured on the front page of Tapas or Webtoon.
- Somebody very popular with just the right sort of following shared, or better- talked about, it on social media.
- They got featured in some kind of article or won a competition or award
- They did a very well designed advertising campaign and spent significant money on it.
So overall, if you're keen to grow your audience because you're not content with just doing it as a fun hobby and occasionally getting odd subs, you'll have to really put in the grind on your comic like it's your job. Make pages with close to the same production values as a print comic, keep a regular update schedule, advertise on multiple social media platforms, possibly spend money on promo, get in design advice on your cover and all your promo assets if you don't have a design background to draw on and monitor how these approaches or any changes you make affect your subs in terms of observable trends you can build on.
