I think looking at what your fans have to say is important, but at the end of the day it's your story and you should treat it as such. A fan may bring up something you never even thought about, but you end up totally agreeing with. Other times that won't happen.
You know the kind of world your story takes place in, and it's important to keep that in mind. Does it make sense to include that kind of representation to the world your characters are in? If it does then great and if not then too bad.
I have a character in my comic who is bisexual, but it's not really a factor in his character development (which has more to do with insecurities about not being able to live up to his show business dad and this insecurity being hidden under over-confidence). If he lived in Alabama I could see his sexuality being a bigger factor in his development, but he lives in a fairly progressive place and just isn't brought up as much.
Doesn't mean it won't ever be mentioned in the comic mind you, but if I do include it it has to be in a more fluid way than just having Hal go "btw I'm bi so hi :)"
