So, I’ve thought about doing character cameos in my comic, yknow a fun webcomic tradition. But I’m wondering, what would happen when I try to print and sell it as books? Would I need to pay royalties to all the creators who sent in characters? Or do I give a disclaimer when accepting characters that I will NOT be paying? But is that too rude?

Let me know what you think, especially if you’ve printed and sold your comic with cameo characters in it.

Oh and one final thing: what about allowing patron cameo characters? I’m charging people to give me their characters and then charging them again for the print book? Are most people fine with that?

Note: I would be fine with all these scenarios of having cameo characters with no royalties back to me, but I’m curious how others would feel.

This is why I always ask the creators first before putting in cameos and generally put them in stuff like social media avatars where they're easy to swap out. Before putting together the print book of Errant, I approached all the people who provided cameos for permission, and they're all credited in the back of the book too.

In most cases, people will say "sure!" and won't expect royalties if the cameo is just in one panel, but it's always safest to ask unless the person is literally a close friend (like there are a few Errant cameos in Alien Heart, but that's fine because Anna is my BFF, so she knows the answer is always yes so she can surprise me with cameos).

Another option may be to make a parody type of cameo with slightly different features that is still recognizable simply to cover your basis when it comes to copyright.

Disclaimer: I haven't printed/sold my comic anywhere yet and I haven't done any character cameo because I do worry about copyright issues with printing :cry_01:

But! Here's what I'd do in case I decided to add a cameo:
-Be VERY clear from the very beginning about my intentions to print/publish and not share royalties.
-In case of self-publishing, I'd probably add a bonus page at the end of the comic where all character cameos can be seen, with credits to the original author(s), info on where to find their comic and/or perhaps a QR code that can be scanned to find their comic?
-If an agreement can't be reached/the original creator of the character vanishes and doesn't answer your questions, remove the character from the comic altogether and replace with an original one.

I'm just afraid the person will change their mind when they become successful and ask for royalties. Or they end up being too big or something like that. So I'm just like "You know what? I think I'll just stick to my own characters..."

I'm also afraid of controversies that character could get into. Like maybe it's based off of someone who've they obsessed over with High School and the author is still stalking to this day.

I am confused about that. Shouldnt you rather pay them to give you their character and then pay them again? Why would you charge the people for their characters you want. they need to pay you for allowing you to use their character? that sounds wrong. Its like I say someone who draws my char needs to pay me so he can draw them for me lol Maybe I misunderstood your concept there, but thats how it sound to me.

other than that. I dunno how to do that as I dun even plan to, but I wouldn't want my char used anywhere else but in my book unless my book gets promoted in that process. Like someone suggested, give links, qr codes so they find the source and possibly increase the readership of the other.

I've done this in two different chapters for the first volume of my comic. The first time I didn't think to include printing in the future when doing a call for characters, so I had to find all the creators to ask them if it was alright. The second time I included it with the call for characters post, so they all were chill with it, but I still asked anyway once I got around to printing. No one wanted money or anything like that, but they were all just used as 1-2 page background/scenery filler out of 192, so like... I can't see a point in them asking about royalties?

Although I did include shout-out pages in the back of my book for everyone who contributed, even the folks who I could no longer find.

Long Post

I don't think people will generally have a problem if you add in that you'll be printing when asking for characters.

Oh shoot, thanks for reminding me - I've updated this cameo thread4 with a little something to address this question for those who find it a point of concern XD It's questions like these that remind me why I have some of my ... less popular beliefs about art and creation :'D

I don't think anyone expects to be paid if their character is like in the background (a totally normal thing that we do in Webcomics) but personally I'd remove the characters from the bg when I put it to print. So many webcomic creators disappear after 1 year that it would be kinda hard to find them all, and just too much nuisance to send out emails everyone to see what type of credit they want

To avoid paying royalties, you'll generally have to work under fair use. Are you presenting the cameo characters in parody? That tends to make it easier to get away with. Depends on who the character is too. Are we talking characters created by this community, or are we talking Darth Vader?
