Hey there! Welcome to Tapastic. I'm a writer of a few different books, but on Tapastic, I create Atonement.
I love Television right now. It's sort of a golden age for tv storytelling, and I could list a lot of fantastic shows. I'll keep it to five. : )
The Leftovers: I was a huge fan of Buffy, and then LOST. Those were the first shows that really grabbed me as a young adult. The Leftovers is Damon Lindelof's (writer of LOST) current project. Season two just ended, and season three will be the final season. In my opinion, this is the best show on television right now. The writing is unparalleled, the acting is beyond incredible, and the low sci-fi/spiritual mystery and storytelling is haunting. It's the sort of show that sits in your guts for days after you watch an episode. It takes a few episodes to really sink in, because it's a dense show with a lot going on ... and it can be challenging, depressing even. But man, is it worth it.
The Americans: A close second to The Leftovers. Simply put, it's not only the best spy story that I've ever seen, or the best story about the Cold War that I've ever seen, it's also the best story about the challenges of marriage and raising kids that I've ever seen. And it's got a good deal of action and thrills to keep the story moving along so that it never feels too weighed down by all of the difficult moral questions it asks.
The Expanse: It's Game of Thrones meets Chinatown, in a near-future outer space noir yarn. It's phenomenal. The acting, writing, cinematography, effects ... everything about it is top notch through its first season. If it keeps going the way it began, it will easily eclipse BSG and Firefly as my favorite space opera show ever.
Daredevil/Jessica Jones: A lot of strides have been made with the quality of comic book to screen adaptations over the past ten years. Sin City, The Watchmen, V for Vendetta, the three newest Batman movies, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe have significantly raised the stakes on the big screen. Agents of Shield and Agent Carter are both strong series. I even really enjoy The Flash for what it is. What Netflix has done with the first two seasons of Daredevil and the first season of Jessica Jones far outshines all of their competition, though. These are the most visually arresting, atmospheric, deep super-hero stories that have ever jumped off of the page and onto the screen. I can't pick between the two!
Fargo: It's funny and brutal and sharp and intelligent and deep and beautiful. Both of its seasons are better than the already great movie that they were inspired by. It boasts a super strong cast, magic realism done very well, and a tongue-in-cheek style of storytelling that other shows could learn a lot from. It's one of the very best things on television, and probably the best of the newer "mini-series per season" shows. And those Minnesotan accents!
