First online review of my comic - Definitely not sugar-coated

I guess no matter what— there's going to be some negative comments over someone's work. For my comic Girron - on Twitter, on Kickstarter so far things overall have usually been positive.

Getting my work reviewed is a new thing, and it's nerve-racking! I know it'll freak me out if they hate it.

I recently submitted my comic to ComicBastards.com and they graciously decided to review it.

So...first thing they said was "Girrion depressed me." I was surprised. I know it's dark but never thought of it is in that tone. Hearing this depressed me as it was in the first sentence in the review. In a walking on egg shells fashion I read on, and actually it was a positive review! The last paragraph was really inspiring. Overall, I have to say I was impressed with CB's writing. Still, I feel like I'm walking through treacherous terrain.

I think overall, it's a good review. Maybe it wasn't exactly what you wanted, but it seems to me that you created an emotional response with the reader, which is ultimately what every artist wants to do. To make the reader really feel something about the world you created says a lot, and you should be really proud! Great job!

To be completely honest this is a pretty positive review. You are never going to be able to decide which emotions one hundred percent the reader will walk away with and all you can do is set the appropriate tone and let the readers themselves decide how they feel. I'd say if that is your first review then you are probably in good standing, and I'd encourage you to be a bit more confident in submitting your stuff to critics.

I second what @Vikiro_Hop says about being more confident in the submission process. You don't even have to BE confident, just feign it! Presentation is everything and I've learned through dozens of portfolio presentations that talking about your work honestly and positively gives you a massive boost with your audience. Not only does it show passion for your work but it also makes it known that you have respect and a serious attitude about what you're doing.

That said, awesome review indeed! I'd say you were largely successful with your work and message (which is always exciting)! I hope you continue to share your work with more reviewers to keep pushing your skills. They're already fantastic, you can only grow from here!
