Gray Silker is an eighteen-year-old troublemaker starting her first semester at university. She had just been released from juvenile prison - where she was since thirteen - at reaching adulthood. Her mother is a deadbeat, her dysfunctional grandparents donât want to take her, and her father is unknown. A longtime family friend, Astrid Holler, who may even care for Gray far more than Gray's own family, is the chancellor of the university and manages to get Gray a place there. As long as she remains on good behaviour, that is - something Astrid is responsible for, and hoping will go well. But then - a murder occurs at the university, and Gray decides to investigate with her friends, much to Astrid's displeasure.
Soleil Meraquelé is a twenty-year-old thief, part of the smuggling crew of The Gannet. Separated from her parents at a young age, Soleil was taken in and raised by the Pirate-Witch Eilise Anaylifia. At one stop to the city, Soleil gets separated from the crew; during which she attracts attention of some shadowy government, due to her barely remembered heritage.
In the background, things are heating up in their nation - but especially in the demon community. The long time leadership of Asiris and Iroquel was turned on its head almost twenty years old, when Iroquel abruptly disappeared - assumed dead - and Asiris lost his eye, becoming Stefan Siris. The only leader now, Stefan Siris has been steadily increasing tensions and reigning in greater control of the demon community, for things unknown.
All things eventually collide, and begin to fall together - or apart.
