There's a lot of stories in the thread already but here's mine. It's Tales From New Jump City.

Summary: Emi is a school journalist whose life gets turned upsidedown one day when a normal commute back home gets interrupted by a local gang and a mysterious stranger carrying a sword-shaped object wrapped in cloth. This event sets off a series of events that involve her with fight clubs, mysterious Yokai creating trouble, and powerful groups vying for control over the city.

Thanks for the feedback. And yeah, you're right about describing the ballroom. Considering this is set in 1813, I should add more detail for readers to get a feel of the setting.
