Going the extra mile!

The next chapter of my comic takes place entirely in a big, modern, and expensive house.

Architectural and Interior design aren't my forte but I still had to give it a shot and actually make a blueprint of the house to use as reference when writing and drawing the chapter!!

And believe me, this is absolutely necessary for the upcoming chapter.

I go for the opposite but still complicated approach of writing and sketching the chapter first and then figure out the minimal amount of environment planning I need to complete the chapter. But like an idiot, I still end up making a huge portion of it in 3d, like why did I have to set one of my chapters in a gothic cathedral.

I used Adobe InDesign for the blueprints. It's pretty good to align things in a page. But I guess any program that uses vector graphics would've been useful.

Haha! I usually use that approach too (minus the 3D, I just draw the background).
But for this chapter it was NECESSARY to plan out the environment. I won't tell why but it's gonna be obvious once the chapter is done.

Nah, it's a modern house. It'll have minimalistic furniture and such. And it's not just because it'll take less to draw, ok!

I do the same for mine, I usually end up making them in 3D as well. Definitely settings that I use a lot, like Veronica's house, get a full treatment so I can stay consistent with rooms and such.

@Oriflamme I also use a lot of 3D models for backgrounds, though I find I get better results if I just use them as proportion and lighting reference. Yours gives it a fun video-gamey feeling, though!

Thanks, but in my case, I feel like it’s starting to be a curse. I’m jealous of the artist who have the vision and the confidence of drawing background by hand, and sometime use

Part of the impetus for starting, was reading all those fantasy-romance with those asset store sketchup 3D backgrounds and thinking to myself, I could do better than that.

I can in fact do better than that, but now I’m incapable of doing simplified backgrounds. I can’t let myself draw my character in a square and add a color gradient as background because I was already planning to model the environment do I might as well use it for another panel, and since it is going to be in multiple panels, I might as well put in the effort of making it look good. That is how I end up updating once a month.

Since I work traditional, simple gradients can be a challenge! I always have to think twice if the panel is getting cluttered.

I see it not as a curse, but as your artistic dedication.
Your characters move with such energy within detailed backgrounds, creating the unique atmosphere of your work.

If you keep going with your current approach, your Blender skills will only get better.
That sounds like an exciting future ahead!
