Hi. First of all, let me say I've joined Tapas(tic) a good while ago. I posted my webcomics for some time, but wasn't happy with some of my early choices and ultimately became discouraged and went on hiatus.
At one point I thought of coming back to do some fan comics, I remember asking around if doing that here makes sense and all that, but honestly that was just me procrastinating.
What can I say, I always really wanted to build a universe.
(Humility is only one of my good qualities.)
So this would be my re-re-introduction, I guess? Whatever you want to call it. I remember this website to be a good place to post, with a friendly community of cool people, so throughout my hiatus I always intended to come back here and keep Tapas as my main webcomic publishing place. But I'm also aware I don't interact enough with people just in general, which is why I wanted to post on the forums (as well as catch up on some reading) and see what people are up to.
Meanwhile, I'm trying to rewrite, redesign and finally, hopefully, at some point in the future, dear universe please don't let my old computer crash, restart my webcomic-verse. So far, my work has been primarily inspired by superhero comics, though I have to admit, I am currently experiencing a high level of superhero burnout with the movies and all. So I'm trying to revise my basics, start small and expand. At some point I'd like to use this thread to maybe bounce some ideas off of people, post character art and so on.
For now I can say that in the long term, I'd like to develop four different, but connected series, same world, different time periods. Of course, I'm trying to be realistic here, I would work on each one at a time, this is more of a "where would you want to see yourself in five years" type thing:
Series A: "prehistoric" setting, this is what I'm working on most at the moment. This is something completely new, I realized I need to go back in time with the starting point to establish some ideas.
Series B: "ancient/medieval" setting, but with steam technology, I'd like to avoid both the Victorian era aesthetic typical in steampunk and the Tolkien/Game of Thrones look as well (this would be a reboot of my Age of Steam story, which is a complete trainwreck)
Series C: "superhero/modern" setting, I'd like it to be a healthy, logical extension of B (this would be a reboot of my Age of Smoke story, which was better, but I lost track of where it was going at some point)
Series D: "future stuff" I honestly haven't thought of i that much yet
So, at this point, one big thing I need to figure out is the format, I'd like to do the whole vertical thing this time. But I haven't fully figured out how to approach it. I use a laptop and don't have anything with a vertical screen to quickly check what things look like. And a lot of comics here that are adjusted for mobile are difficult to read on horizontal screen. But I also don't like how some comics do a traditional page setup and then vertical with re-arranged panels. So I'm thiking the best way for me to go is do two versions of a comic, but keep both in vertical setup (to keep same panel composition), just vary resolution and font size, so one is better for small vertical screens and computer screens, and the high res would work for bigger tablet devices. Does that make sense? Does someone already do that specific approach?
Also, I spent maybe two weeks making my own font, and now I don't know how I feel about it. I should probably post it later for feedback. Fuck, this is all overwhelming.
On a brighter note, anyone who has bothered to read all my rambling, first of all, thanks! Second, I'm opening a short list of sketch requests - if you post a picture of your character in the comments below, I'll draw/paint a 30-45 mins sketch of them. I can do three.
See you later?
