Before I do anything...I am not a professional and please take my advice with a grain of salt. I am just a humble manager of the underworld. Thank you.
This thread will be a collective of where I go to vomit my thoughts on writing or art. Feel free to react, agree, disagree, or ignore as you please.
Hello moses my friend. Ahem.
Let's break this with the first post being on probably the most important part of your comic.
Getting people to care.
We see the posts all the time...Why aren't people reading my comic? Why don't I have subscribers? How do I get readers?
Art styles aside, let's focus on the writing aspect today and a thing called the PITCH.
This leads to the fearful question we all face time to time.
What is this?
If you can’t answer “what is this?” why should I read? Why should you create?
Learn to answer this before getting caught up in the numbers and glory.
This is why learning to pitch your project is so important! It creates the excitement to get me to read your idea, to care!
There is this magical beast in pitch land called a LogLine. A logline or "one line" is a monster that can only be slayed by telling your idea in one sentence ONLY.
In fact, this very sentence will answer dreaded "WHAT IS THIS" that plagues us all! A great logline will entice readers while a terrible one will turn us away and tear up your well trimmed gardens. :/
Loglines often contain three components:
- Irony, it is also called the hook.
- Potential, you must be able to see premise.
- Audience, the ability to tell who the story is for and directed toward.
Let's look at an example from Cat's Don't Dance.
"Danny, an ambitious singing/dancing cat, goes to Hollywood and overcomes several obstacles to fulfill his dream of becoming a movie star."
From this pitch we can tell what the story is about, the irony of a...dancing cat.....and the fact that it is probably geared for a younger audience.
Let's try another.
Pan's Labyrinth
"In Spain of 1944, the bookish young stepdaughter of a sadistic army officer escapes into an eerie but captivating fantasy world."
Clearly not meant for kids and for a more fantastical audience. Irony is perhaps the fantasy in Spanish world?
Anyway, loglines are so so important and I can't stress this enough.
I'm tired and rambly so I'll stop here for this post! Have a great day and thank you for actually reading. o/
