OH MY GOODNESS. A CHANCE TO SHARE THE STORY
YES
From Far Away, aka, Kanata Kara
I read quite a bit of manga when I was younger. I read Battle Royale, and...didn't feel anything, at any point, for any of the characters (except Souma, she was saddening, but I didn't come close to crying). I've read some other heart-grabbing manga and it just never clicked with me. I've read Inuyasha! And...eh. Great story. Didn't reach me, though.
From Far Away is an old manga with the most adorable style I have ever seen, to this day. It's nice and simplistic, and every single line is flowing with life.
The heroine realizes that she's a big cry baby (but it makes a lot of sense, given she's literally blown into another world and she sees giant bug monsters), and changes. She decides to toughen up and not burden the stranger who's taken it upon himself to protect her, much to his dismay. We're not just told she'll do this, we're shown it, and that doesn't mean she becomes an abusive "badass, takes nothing from no one" archetype.
There's a dark destiny. Charming characters. Great dynamics. The heroine is genuinely lovable and so wholesome and the romantic lead is so sweet and nothing like the dismissive abusive characters who are often paired with her type of personality. There's an overarching plot, some mini plots, and everyone is so cute, and she's so cute, and he's so cute, and AGHHH. You just wanna grab em and put them in your pocket and carry them around.
And the ENDING it built up to. It left me with a lot of hope and I cried and my heart turned to cheese, holes and all. I reread that series every chance I get, and I always watch the prices on its out-of-print manga books. One day, I'll buy them, so I can complete my collection (unless they end up being in the thousands, in which case I'll just...grow more holes in my heart, I guess).
