I have been asked many times, but I have refused all offers because none of them involved paying me. Strangers/a church wanted me to work for the "exposure," instead of money...and the church had the added bonus of threatening my soul when I politely declined. (It was the rural deep south...it was an odd place)
The others were vague acquaintances that were aware that I could do "art things," and figured they knew me well enough to impose on me for no compensation.
Lastly, some friends had grandiose ideas for logos and website art, but most of them got tripped up over the logo when I asked for specifics and explained why their original ideas would not work for a logo (too much text, too detailed to be useful, too difficult to recognize for passerbys walking/driving by), and most stopped with their company ideas from there. The rest gave up when I started poking holes in their nonexistent business plans because there were noticeable flaws when I tried to get ideas for whatever art they wanted (some did not even know if they wanted to be online or have a physical storefront). If I knew them well enough to consider their requests, I knew they needed to develop their ideas much more before imposing on me for a logo because a company does not start from a picture. I also did not want them making a poor financial decision and losing money before they considered everything.
I admittedly provide unusual insight because I have a MBA with a minor in Marketing, and I can do graphic design well enough, but I won't take on most projects because my real job takes up too much of my time, or the project has no traction and I will be wasting my effort.
I also learned early on from the military that an organization will absolutely abuse an artist, so learning when to say no is essential, especially when you are already strained for time and resources.
