This reminds me a lot of how I was gonna write Addis.
He gets better because I'm a softie for happy endings, but there was the plan that he was gonna just be awful.

So, how did you manage to change his attitude—I mean, your character's?

very very slowly.
i think it takes 50 chapters into Shadow of Desire before you can ever start to say he's not as bad. because he's still in self denial mode that far into the story, and I never completely softened him. He stays arrogant, selfish, and possessive, but he skims the line of "acceptable"

So, in my opinion, great that you do not soften him. I mean, it is even too often when the character is 'excused' by some backstory or something. Of course, there are many points of view and stories behind good and bad decisions, but the need to always 'explain' is recently overused. What do you think?

I agree!
Like sure Addis had a "tragic backstory" but even he outright admits he's an ass by choice. He openly and continues to use people because he can and its easier, he just adds Faye to his "this is mine and therefore I will treat it with care so it doesn't break" list, so Faye gets his nicer side.
I never try to use his backstory to excuse his behavior, it just frames it
