perhaps a bad place to ask, but what exactly is a light novel? it's a familiar term and I think it has something to do with short-form writing and illustration, but I never figured it out exactly

Typically around 100 pages, Light novels are quick, easy reads with short paragraphs and a vocabulary easily grasped by teenagers and young adults. A novel, on the other hand, encompasses a vast diversity of fictional literature somewhere over the 50,000 word range (roughly 150 or more pages).

A novella is a narrative work of prose fiction shorter in both length and breadth than a novel, but longer than a short story. Typically, novellas dramatize individual events, or a short series of events, such as a day in the life, or an important turning point in a character’s life. While novellas normally do not have specific requirements in terms of length, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America limit novellas to 60 to 130 pages, or 17,500 to 40,000 words.

You missed the obvious difference - a novella does not need to be 'quick, easy reads with short paragraphs and a vocabulary easily grasped by teenagers and young adults' but a light novel usually is.

though I'd probably call a light novel a "young adult novella" which I'm sure has to be a thing too right

Yep. The term 'light' defines that. Light as in weight and not luminosity. Cheers!
