How did your family members react to the story you created?

After my sister saw my comic, she said: 'It's okay~', and didn't say much else. Other family members were about the same.

I put my works (usually illustrations) on social media platforms. Some include NSFW content, which I neither deliberately show nor hide from them, and they usually don't express any opinions about my work.

Although they don't say much, I'm happy to have been born into a family where I can draw freely, without too many restrictions or put-downs.

My dad actually convinced me to start making Reap shortly after I illustrated a children's book for his company. He basically asked if I had fun drawing for it, and told me to just do it, tell my story. In fact, every time I go on hiatus he gets a little worried that I had given up on it. I'm pretty sure that he and my mom are the only ones in my family that actively read it. I think my sister does every so often, but she just doesn't like reading.

My extended family on the other hand, on my mom side probably either don't read it at all, or have and are a little scared of me. Hell, one of my uncles, when he was still alive and long before I started making the comics was in fact scared of how often I drew macabre stuff.

On my dad's side, I don't really know, I'm sure that if they have they would at least appreciate that Emerald is Jewish

My family has always been very supportive.
My brother and me used to do crazy comic pages every day when we
were kids and our parents always gave us DINA3 printer paper and
pens.

My dad made some lettering for my comic and my mum did the german
dialogues of the characters. The comic got printed and won a contest
and I love that I will always have that memory.

I don´t share every story / comic / music etc. with my family because they wouldn´t like
some of the content. I draw a lot of nsfw stuff and I also see it as nsff(amily)

I started writing my short stories in elementary school based on fan fiction crossovers. I was a kid so it wasn't anything fancy.

By highschool it was my own creations and some shorts, which felt like episodes of a series at times. They were about 32 MS Word pages long. I would hand write them during highschool classes when I was bored. My mother was and stiill is an avid reader. 100 pages an hour. I used to be able to read that fast pre my brain injury too. She likes horror, fantasy, sci fi and mystery genres.
I wrote more mystery, horror. She asked about it one day. I kept printing off one word page at a time off my floppydisk, I let her read it. She was like, the way I pulled people in and the style felt similar to steven king. I know of his movies but never read his books. I was like oh?

I just thought she was being nice though.....until I started my manga.. the comments coming in were talking about how I was pulling people in, the colours would play the environment and mood well. People were relating to the characters and some felt what they felt. As if they were there with them.
I was like...uhhh....huh?
Cause when I look at it I see a mess of things because I'm learning that style.

My mother knows I work with art commissions and knows I've published stories on Tapas, although she's never read them. My sister, who is several years older than me, subscribes to both of my series. Her English is less fluent than mine, but I appreciate her support. She rarely comments, but she's given me the hint that she likes my work.

They know I draw comics, because I do it since my teenage years. The last time I visited them Dad told me that my comic is good, but I don't think he read it. I only upload my new comic in english, and my parents can't speak/read so much in english. But recently Dad likes my tiktoks I make to promote the comic which is cute from him.
My brother and sister as much as I know doesn't read any of my comics.
How should I say... I don't really talk much about my comics to anyone around me, because I feel it is not interesting to others as much as for me.

My family knows I draw, and they’re mostly very supportive now (Mom used to lecture me about my art style and how digital art is not “real” art), however I think that’s mostly due to the fact that I don’t ever show my stories to them, especially not to Mom. Once I made a one shot for a comic contest and actually won, and Mom demanded that I show it to her. She ended up becoming really worried about both me and the main character and I had to lie to her about the ending (“Of course he’s gonna make it, Mom”) to calm her down. So, considering I am now drawing a comic involving literal war crimes… not doing that again.
My siblings, on the other hand, know all the details about my stories but aren’t really interested in them as long as they’re not published anywhere. They sometimes like some of the characters, but especially the younger one makes it very clear that they’re not interested in all my stuff.

Comedic relief can be really important in stories like that. What I’m working on right now is actually a romance story, but it’s set in the beginning of WW2 and there are some incredibly disturbing things going on. So yeah, comedy is really needed to lighten up the mood a bit (not straight in the middle of a war crime of course, but wherever it’s appropriate).
When I did the research for the story, I actually doodled a comedy comic on the side about whatever I was currently researching, just to process it somehow. Now that I will definitely not be showing anyone lol

My mother hates my work. She praised me for it as a child, but when I got older she saw it as something to ridicule. I hate that I let her hold me back to the point I never formally studied art. She didn't think I could ever support myself as a starving artist. Anyway, that's why my art is a bit on the folksy side.

My Dad saw my Christmas Special video and said he liked it. Didn't ask any deeper what specifically he thought.

I haven't shown/told anyone else in my family, or any of my close friends. I don't think I could handle their judgment yet, and I feel more comfortable making my comic knowing I won't be berated for it by someone close to me.
