That jibes with my experience. Dad loved his tech; but release-wise, we were behind on most consoles, undoubtedly as a result of expense. This seemed to be the norm where we grew up (Northern Kentucky),
So, in 1984, we had the Odyssey 2. In 88', we had the Atari 7800, but playing 5200 games, which got us to the 90's. Therefore, no Nintendo for us in the 80's. Our first actual, true-blue, at-release console was the SNES in 1992-ish, because Super Mario Bros was the bomb. That's when I was in college.
Edit: To be fair to bakasama25, there was a guy in college who brought a NES with him that he had from release, but he was a little rich sh... er, I mean, he was well off, lol.
