One word: xkcd ...Oh wait, that's not a word XD
In case of xkcd, it works because:
1) The writing is excellent.
2) The stick figure art has a cool synergy with the stick figure art; some of the jokes actually work better because you can't see their expressions/ details.
3) it's GOOD stick figure. The art manages to communicate body languages and such very clearly, and it's easy to tell different recurring characters apart. The proportions are always very consistent; you never see a character randomly getting one longer leg, etc.
4) Sometimes they include detailed environments when the writing calls for it, and those environments are well drawn without clashing against the stick figures.
In short, yes, it could be good, but it's not going to be easier than using a more detailed art style. There are many different paths to excellence, but there is no shortcut!
