For my comic, I went for fantasy for the unique reason of lowering my research needs. Not that I don't like research, I like it TOO MUCH.
But I still do some research to make things believable within my fantasy world. I'd say only 5 to 10% of my working time is research on this project.
However, I've just started writing a novel set in the real world, which at chapter 1, already required me to read over 20 scientific papers.. well.. it was probably not REQUIRED, but I felt the need to do it. So for this I'd say research time equals writing time. Themes are mostly biology, communication (language; spoken, body etc)
In the past, I abandoned a story due to the ridiculous amount of research it would require.
But still, I think research is a good part of the fun of writing, for me.
