So after trying the TV tropes thing (see this thread!)
I felt lost at first because it's kinda computer coding and I suck a it. SO, I thought some basic things on how to do this would be helpful. Everyone else is welcome to help as well. After all, regardless of where you stand on that debate, we all want to add things to our fav shows and comics sometimes, right?
Topics I'll cover in this first post (and will maybe edit more in later??)
- Starting a new page for the comic or show I love!
- How to edit page
- Adding a picture
- Adding spoiler tags
- Adding a trope to the page
- Description of trope tips
Making sure it's added properly
Starting a new page for the comic or show I love!
First step is to always double check if one has already been made. If it hasn't, then it's time to move forward! To make it easier, I recommend going to another page that's the same category as the one you are going to make. so if you want to make a webcomic one, find one that ends with Webcomic/titleofcomichere
everything after that last backslash you delete and then put the title of the work and hit enter so you can go to the page.
You'll get something that looks like this
choose where is says to edit the page to start your editing.... which leads to
how to edit the page, in general: ok so a simplified guide here folks because it's confusing enough for non programers like me. When you start it will look like this (but less text)
Now, for those that don't know what you are doing the first time- start simple with a copy and paste of the description if you are starting fresh. If you are nervous and just making some edits, copy and paste the text (aka source code) into a document. No one else can edit for up to 20 minutes while you are editing. At the bottom you'll see a preview button.
I recommend using it to check if you accidentally broke something for deleted something. You an do this as often as you like and it'll show up in a new tab each time.
Once you hit save, it is published. Be warned, if you have spelling errors and the like you may get e-mailed about it later- but it won't say where the mistake was from what I have seen.
- Adding a picture- we can all agree a good picture helps with the page right? well here you have to follow a few steps. Below the preview button you'll see add picture, click on it and drag and drop your pic like you would for google drive
this will give you what the picture will look like and a bit of code that looks like this:
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screen_shot_2019_07_21_at_85548_am.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350:We will help her... help everyone- Range]]
Now if you don't want a caption, delete the caption with set of brackets, otherwise between the colon and he bracket, type in what you want to be below the picture.
Spoiler Tags: Sometimes we want to add good reasons why something is a trope, but we don't want to spoil it for everyone! Thankful you just type in what you want and add
[[spoiler:
in front of it followed by matching double brackets
adding a trope to the page: it's not as hard as you think. You simply type it like so:
and continue tying on. This will automatically add a link directly to that trope.
If you want to indent to add sub points or additional evidence/support, simply go to the next line and do a double astirix.
I want to mention this will not automatically add you to that trope's page.
-adding the work to a trope page: this one makes my head swim a bit because of all the lines. But it's an important step to link back. What I tend to do is copy what I wrote on the media's page about the trope so it is consistent. Then when I go to edit I'll scroll down (in this case for webcomics) to find the line that reads
[[folder:Webcomics]]
I then find where the work would be alphabetically and enter the work there (more or less, sometimes it's out fo order). Now where things get a bit different is I'm not putting the trope name first because we are on the tropes site, I am adding the work. You'll need to start off the entry like this:
This will allow you to create a link back to the work. Then just continue as normal for editing.
- Description of trope tips: Regardless if you are adding a series to a trope page or a trope to a series page you need to support the reason why. So you can't just go "Grew beyond their programming because they all interact and stuff!". Instead you have to support it with evidence and any specific character. So as one example, I used Drive as one (of several) example because that scene showed how a man was saying he thought too much. Don't worry about spoilers as that is what the spoiler tags are for.
I also want to mention that it's a really good idea, as mentioned before, to make sure what is said is consistent and you have links back where possible.
I hope this helps, please comment below with further tips or if I need to clear up anything. I'm kinda done for now.... foreign languages make my head swim (and coding is a language!)
