Yeah, it’s definitely a rough experience. I never had much hope for my novel since it’s a straight fantasy set in an African-inspired setting, so I knew it would be an uphill battle. Even so, seeing that only one person(or on rare occasions two) read a chapter and that it’s just me and/or my SO, really makes you want to give up. My story is already complete, so I might as well finish posting it, but I don’t have much desire to write and release a second book haha. It was mostly for myself anyway, so I’ve come to accept it for what it is and I’m moving on.

Unless the novel is something you’ve invested significant time and money into, or your livelihood is at stake, I’d take a step back and think about why you want to write it in the first place.

Part of the problem is that tapas and espeacially forums like this, is artist for artist. And while yes sometimes artist/writers can be some of the most voracious readers, they can also get singularly obssesed with their own work and ignore everything else. It might sound antithetical but to get readers sometimes you have to step outside of writer spaces.

As well as do alot of collabs and interactions.
Its a loud world out their. So if you want to get noticed quickly you have to be louder (though not obnoxious) i do need to take my own advice as collabs terrify me.

Theirs also a qoute "it took me 10 years to become an overnight success."

I heavily relate. The fact that promotion threads are a lie and only give an ILLUSION of growth + imo the fact that the forums here don't even let you add in signatures like in traditional forum sites where you can have a banner for your webcomic at the bottom of every message you send makes it REALLY hard to organically grow your work.

Genuinely how do you even grow when the only way to look at someone's work outside of promotion threads is to click their profile and HOPE they have a bio that has a link to their webcomic?
