This is actually something I did recently with my current project, Hub JETIRKO. The previous plot line had some overlap with the current one, but the new MC wasn't slated to appear until post-climax. But all the small plot points and things I wanted to do in the previous story had no connecting points, and it felt impossible getting everything to line up.
When I decided to completely scrap the original story of Hub JETIRKO and go in this new direction, start from a completely different point of view with fresh characters/perspective/etc, all the plot points and things I wanted to focus on suddenly fit together. It was like I had the puzzle upside down, and it wasn't until I flipped it around that I realized where all the pieces were supposed to go. I was bewildered by how well everything fit together.
Now I'm at the point where I need to figure out the in-between chapters of the big plot points, since they've all been broken down. But I'm leaps and bounds ahead with this new plot than previously, and I'm super excited about the progress.
Sometimes, you need to let that old idea you loved to death, well... die. So that when it's reborn it comes one step closer to what the end product needs to be, whether you see it or not.
Good luck to you, friend!
