Uh, sorry ahead of time for the rant.
Ah, I used to have a disclaimer at the beginning of my comic. Took it down not too long ago as an experiment, after so receiving comments from people saying some parts are too NSFW for them, but they want to keep reading the comic anyway. I'll probably put something up for the more messed up scenes... if I'm able to recognize how messed up they are.
Personally I'm in the crowd who feels warnings should only be put for extreme circumstances (graphic gore, sex, extreme violence), rather than for every small thing that may possibly make someone upset. Not too long ago I saw a comic with a warning for emotional abuse, and it was a guy who yelled at another guy, not using profanity or demeaning phrasing of any kind. Saw another one for abuse, and it was a character slapping another once, not even causing a bruise or using violent language of any kind other than the word 'hell'. Sure, it is technically physical abuse, but the scene was so vanilla. I expected to see something more... disturbing? Horrifying? Something that actually warranted a warning?
You can also find TWs (trigger warnings) for everything under the sun on Tumblr, which is probably where the over-sensitivity with creative works is coming from. Helping out people with mental healthy problems is super important, but things kind of lose their effectiveness when you saturate everything with a warning label. (I've seen TWs for skys, different colours, grass, rain, hair, you name it)
Of course that's just my opinion, a lot of people actually prefer labels like that. Maybe I'm just jaded and overly desensitized from the horror movies, and violent cartoons I watched growing up. Can't empathize very well with someone being triggered into an episode from the existence of the sky, or grass, though I won't deny the possibility.
Mentioned it before, but not too long ago I got an anon message on tumblr calling me, and my comic transphobic for my bratty main character calling another character a tranny. I won't deny the character is transphobic, but it's funny to see since I'm not cis, and try to make it clear that their behavior is shitty. I believe that was before I took my comic's general disclaimer down too, so I can't say I didn't warn them about the content. They saw full frontal nudity, character abuse and substance abuse, but the tranny part apparently was what upset them... don't know what I could have done about that.
Do whatever you feel is best for your work. Despite me totally bitching about it, I don't think anyone is going to knock your stuff for you being cautious.
