I'm planning to make a couple of references in my main comic and I feel like it would be a funny thing to do for people who like pop culture. What do you guys think?

A lot of it depends on the context of your book and the humour involved. You should be fine as long as youre not trying to throw references in ALL THE TIME.
As long as they don't feel shoehorned in just for the sake of making a reference, have at it. They can be pretty funny if done right.
I think it is a good idea as long as it is not overloaded with references to other comics. Then it's fun to discover them. I do that in my comic MARB as well, for example:

I always wonder if it's legal to do such a thing?
Can you just mention the names of brands, celebrities, etc...?
I know a lot of shows that do it, heck even I do it in some of my comics, so I say go for it!
