Gaius was married to the director of the top mage clan in the state, and it had been putting a strain on their relationship. He hit rock bottom after finding her conducting unethical human experiments on some the new recruits. He made this information public mid-meltdown, and as a result ended up becoming the newest test subject.
Charlotte is the only known vampire by birth, and her father was the only person she had ever been close to. When he disappeared, Charlotte discovered those same human experiments. But the good news is that it wasn't her father being experimented on, and the guy who was in those labs is alive, well, and willing to help with her plight.
Some stuff happened, and I published several questionable updates followed by a hiatus. But things are back to updating regularly, hopefully for the rest of this novel's run.
