Silkie yawned and burrowed deeper into his side with a groan. “Yeah,” she sighed. “Are you and Daddy fighting?”
“No,” Ash replied, startled at the sudden question. “Why would you ask that?”
“Because he hasn’t talked to you very much lately.”
Ash paused, moving his gaze back to the ceiling, his fingers sliding through his hair. “We’re not fighting,” he said slowly, choosing his words carefully. “But he is pretty upset with me.”
“It was better today though,” she said. “In the truck coming home, he talked to you.”
Ash nodded, his shoulders relaxing. “He told me he’ll see me soon, but not right now. He didn’t say why, but I’m sure it’s because he’s busy.”
“Mm,” Silkie hummed, her body growing heavy against his side. “I miss him,” she mumbled.
Ash swallowed, closing his eyes against the needles of tears that sprang to his eyes. “Me, too, baby girl. A lot.”
“Is that why you’re drinking so much?”
Ash’s fingers stilled on her arm, the darkness of his room closing in on him. He had really hoped she hadn’t noticed that. He pinched the bridge of his nose, the burning in his chest radiating down to his gut, still swirling with the remains of his night out.
“Partly, yeah,” he admitted.
“You should stop,” she mumbled. Sleep was claiming her quickly, something he was glad for. They had spent the better part of the last six weeks on a very difficult job, and this was the first time they’d had a chance to stop and rest. The job wasn’t done yet, not really. Hell, the job was never done…it wouldn’t be until Scott Tulle was in the ground.
The series has returned!!
