I tend to lean toward stories that start out lighthearted, but then shift to a serious tone. Even better with stories that can bounce back and forth between the two with perfect timing.
IMHO it depends largely on the length of the comic.A short story usually benefits from being serious from start to finish, while a longer series will start to feel like a drag if it's nothing but angst all the time.
