Eh that in and of itself seems pretty arbitrary, and if we are going by Last Halloween standards it would have to be pretty frequent before it had more gore. Not every page, but definitely frequent enough you don't forget it.

Hiveworks is definitely comes off more as a curated thing then a service to web comic artists. Not that they have to be mutually exclusive just that I imagine if your tastes don't agree you won't get far in the way of applying.

Haha the result of joining the scifi contest I'm afraid. The preliminaries were full of aggressive downvoters that tried to knock down any comic that had a better rating than their own.

it happens when the vote is by anonymous system... that allow to steer low or high vote in a way very easy.

That's ridiculous, so our comic's standalone rating will get wrecked by downvotes in the contest???

wow. and my book just got back up to 8.36...I was near a 9 and then in one day I got knocked down to a 7. I can't imagine what kind of crap goes on in the contest lol...eh, no pain no gain though, right?

imho downvoters problem can be influential in the beginning, but in the long time limit... that cheat cannot work too much.
that's because in the beginning the vote's quantity can be affected by fake users (created to downvote others or friends of friends) because just few people are reading it.
but after a lot of time, with a true audiance... cheaters cannot play their tricks as they do in the beginning.

one more thing:
who use this kind of cheat can gain a lot of popularity, maybe quickly... but cant cheat the quality of what he/she does.
and looking at some comic wiith a 7/8/9+ rate... it's even more pathetic.

so, in the end... i dont care too much, those vote can slow down a work, but nothing else.

On the plus side, I don't think the webtoons staff cares about ratings. There's a popularity sort option and their hiring looks like its more geared towards that. Plus I noticed us webtoons artists don't have access to page view and follower counts. It looks like that is something that only the staff can access and I'm pretty sure that they use it to judge comic trend for hiring.

@VermillionWorks I know nothing about their revenue, but it's kind of hard to get featured, I barely see new featured comics than the one I see for months. Featured is based on readers. As they say in conditions, the smallest part is originality and creativity and the biggest part plays feedback. But like someone here said, you don't have access to your statistics. I'm on LINE Webtoon just to spread the good word, outside Tapastic. But community there is... weird... I have so much comments written with capslock on, asking about updates... Many of them are like that... in fact, even if I posted in the description update schedule I get comments like "plas update" or even wrote a whole comment about how much effort does it take to finish the chapter. It makes me interact with the community less than here :/
On Tapastic I don't get those, I get awesome feedback. I can also post on my wall and remind people about update schedule or anything else. Connection between readers and creators is much more better here.

Maybe I'm just unlucky, but comments on Webtoons sometimes make me crazy...

I'm pretty split between the two. While I love Tapastic for it being my first platform to publish my webcomic, I didn't really get any engagement even after 3-4 months of posting. Those that did interact and leave comments whether critical or praising I really appreciated, but it was far and few in between. Most were friend from everyday life that felt obligated to start a conversation...I appreciate them for that. At line, while at times (as mentioned above) some comments were crass and unfounded, I saw a general overall engagement. It also may be a content thing. I saw my Manga take off at Tapastic a bit better than on line and my Superhero comic take off better on Line while weaker at Tapastic. However, the one thing I absolutely hate about Line is the anonymous voting/rating system. It allows for (like mentioned above) trolling from other creators who feel threatened or just simply hate. It got so bad during this current contest, I wanted to just down every comic ahead of mine, but I appealed to my Tapastic side and decided against it. Didn't want to become what I loathed...I only wish Tapastic had a rating system that was transparent, which would allow for another way to get exposure and categorize some comics that get lost in the stream.

I spend an incredible amount of time on my work, so it is a bit disheartening to not have people offer you feed back even after months, but so it goes I guess. I'm going to take time to check out everybody's stuff on here though, and I'm going to keep posting my stuff on both until somebody notices it. I love to create stories, and I'll keep doing that regardless of traction...though a little bit more would be nice. LOL.

@MarcRene The thing about almost every platform is you have to spread the word for your own comic. You can't just post the comic from your own corner of the internet and expect people to come.

There are LOTS of suggestions on self-promo and networking that's already been posted. To get started, why not link to your comic on your forum profile? Tapastic forum doesn't do it automatically, so you have to manually add the link in the About Me section on your profile.

Of course I'm not expecting to just post something and expect people to come. That is a given. What I was commenting on was that even when you put forth such efforts and even advertise it's still very difficult to gain traction with a community which is already reading everyone else's project...it's content heavy and like I was mentioning before it's easy to get lost in that stream. While both platforms are large, there's still a finite number of individuals that participate let alone subscribe and engage.

However, thank you for the tips, I'll definitely implement them to improve performance and get the word out to folks.

Woooh ! I read it all (some diagonally I'll admit...)

Alright, I'm currently posting my comic exclusively on Tapastic but I'm thinking on trying to broaden my audience a bit. So I'm checking out Line and maybe Smackjeeve (though I find their overall design so repulsive it's a big deterrent for me)
I'm kinda scared about the harshness of some readers but I suppose that even if I get one hater for one fan, it will still be worth it...
But my story is in printing format and I'm super slow so I can currently only produce 1 page/week... Which seems unforgivable to Line's audience

If I end up trying Line, do you guys think I should post once a month (so 4-5 pages) or each time I finish a chapter (17-20 pages) which means several months between each updates ?
I kinda like the idea of focusing my energy on Tapastic without having to update weekly to other sites...

Also, if you don't participate in one of the contests, can you still get downvoted ?

I think once a month will work just fine. My comic is drawn in standard printing format as well, and my LINE updates are made up of 5 - 7 pages each which people seem to enjoy. If you're planning on re-arranging your panels to match the Webtoon style, you'll be surprised how much longer you can make your updates seem just by adding some blank space every now and then.

Outside of the contests all comics only have a simple rating out of 10--some people will aggressively rate several comics 1/10, but from what I've seen it's not a real issue like the downvoting wars. People probably don't care enough because there aren't a whole lot of advantages to having a high rating in the first place.

Do you know any comics on webtoon that kept their printing format ?

When I was updating once a month I just constantly received comments like "update already" "where's the update?" or "another series abandoned" and it was whole chapters, srsly Line was so unlucky for me.

About contests people can really destroy you. Uru-chan is perfect example. She was winning and she received so much hate. People even made fake accounts to accuse her for stealing their work.

But I see many people like Webtoons so, give it a try and see how it will work for you.

Yeah, I don't plan on participating in any contests, I'll just see how it goes and if I find it too unpleasant, I'll content myself with Tapastic ! Not much to loose here except a bit of my ego or faith in my readers

Hey guys, so yeah after reading all the opinions here about LINE and how a few have noticed more visibility there I decided to give the site a chance for myself.

Here's my experience. I've started posting my earlier/weaker issues of Oops so I'm not overly surprised that after a month posting there I have 72 subscribers, over 600 views [with absolutely NO promoting my presence there], 6.7 rating and zero negative comments. [low stats compared to other people's experience posting to LINE] In fact, I've gotten some really nice awesome comments there.

Additional thoughts, I feel like it's harder to connect with readers on LINE. There's no wall posting, 200 character limit for episode descriptions so can't write lengthy thanks or extra info. Most I can do is reply back to readers that do comment. So in that sense and being used to Tapastic setup, I feel more isolated from readers on LINE.

I think the negative side of LINE comes when you enter competitions, however as just another place to post a comic it isn't terrible. Each time I post a new episode, Oops can be seen at the top of the Discover page for Fantasy comics which is likely where most of the 600 views came from. Also a negative is that you can't schedule episodes to post, it must be published manually, however you can save "draft episodes" to make it easier to just publish later.

TL:DR- LINE isn't a quick answer for views/subs, however it is easier to be seen there without a ton of self promotion.
It's harder to connect with readers directly, and for the most part the community is nice if you avoid the competitions.
There are less site features to LINE compare to Taps like a lack of episode scheduling and wall posts.

I plan to keep routinely posting there and see where it gets me. All things considered I find it an ok site.

I've personally gotten more negative comments there since my update rate has slowed to a crawl, they really like to have a ton of pages out as fast as possible and don't understand that some of us can only get out pages a little at a time....but I still get mostly positive feedback there. XP

I continue to use it as just another mirror that's updated a bit less often, though I'm afraid to respond too much there anymore since I don't want people to start yelling at me about the update rate. XP I'm thinking about putting an explanation for my updates in the description though...
