LINE WEBTOON promoting SEX to young audience

thanks for sharing. I had trouble getting people to get my point which many seem to be missing since this tread started. my issue is not with sex or creators, it's with the wrong rating of webtoon. Webtoon should abide by the guidelines but they're not.

Line Webtoon’s app is rated 9+ on iOS and 12+ on Google Play. It should not be offering comics that feature sex scenes (even ones that don’t show penetration) unless it bumps the age rating up. There is no mention of sexual content on the App Store or Play Store warnings for the app, which is misleading if there are comics with (even mild) sexual content. That’s not based on my personal beliefs about what children should or shouldn’t be seeing, but based on the descriptions for each age rating on both app stores.

That said, teens are not likely to be damaged in any way by reading a few smutty webcomics. It’s not going to turn them into sex addicts, and if they weren’t reading it on Line Webtoon, they’d be reading it on fanfic archives and so on, or even writing it themselves. Honestly, it’s probably a much healthier way to explore their sexuality than digging through hardcore pornography sites or something.

I have a feeling LINE WEBTOON is more likely to go the smackjeeves route and shit on all mature creators, rather than changing their rating. But hey, let's hope they prove me wrong.
If not, I can say bye-bye to my monthly $400 from them, and the same goes for all other mature creators on the site. Noodles, here I come. At least I have cat food to feed my minipanther for several months ahead.

Sex is something we're programmed to do in order to continue the species. It is natural and it is powerful. Every animal knows how to do it and humans are no exception. It is going to happen, the only question is in what context. Will it happen in ignorance or will it happen with due preparation? Time and time again we've seen that ignorance leads to STDs, teen pregnancies, and lifelong trauma. You do your children a disservice by, well, treating them like children and not the young men and women they are fast becoming.

Exercise some parental guidance. Don't let smut be their sole source of knowledge -- give them the facts and the science too. Point them toward the right websites. Buy a medical handbook if you have to. Arm your sons and daughters with the know-how they need to avoid the dangers and enjoy the experience.

why doesn't webtoon just create a section called "mature" and change their rating to mature 17+ like those manga reading sites? At least no one's complaining in those sites.

Looking at webtoon's ongoing hypocrisy of everything else it's no surprise they are lying in their rating of their app as well.

A very ridiculous thing they did is to create a category called "all age" at the very bottom of all categories, for what? the regular webtoon feed is full of mature comics, why even create all age if not to be a top categories but the very one at the bottom of 30+ categories? ridiculous!

I'm not seeing them openly promoting sex like that. The comics they do feature arent explicit. Now as for discover, that isnt really on webtoon. They do state to mark comics as explicit and im sure there is a consequence for not doing so. Also, anything can be made sexual when users can create content. I remember when i was younger on neopets and people made sex RP groups.

I agree with this, parents monitoring and educating their kids about these things, but when is it too young and old enough? it's something which will be different for everyone and how they raise their kids,whatever they do is their problem and life, My point is not about how to parent your kid regarding sex, it's about webtoon not being straightforward about the content they are allowing. They should be honest like tapas and rate it mature. what is so wrong in that?

I've been having a bit of a moral dilemma with this one.

I would consider my comic 14+ but obviously there's no way to enforce this. I've had a reader ask me to change my preview icon back to a tamer SFW one because the current one would make their parents kill them. ^_^;; Kiddo...
I do put warnings in my comic and even mark any potential mature-content chapters as NSFW but overall I don't feel like my comic is 18+... I just wish Webtoon had a way of marking certain updates as mature like Tapas.

I do agree with sex positivity and that the responsibility should mostly lie with the readers. But personally I do feel kind of awkward knowing people 13 and under might be reading my comic, even if it isn't my responsibility to protect them.

yes, the fault is not the creators, I respect creators wanted to do a certain genre even if it's adult oriented. The problem is webtoon, not the creators. This is what I was trying to say since this started but many keep missing my point and directing me to how to parent kid about sex.

Webtoon has been promoting a couple of BL and ecchi comics in their Recommended and Fresh Picks; it was basically impossible to miss the last month. They aren't explicit as far as I'm aware, but they're straddling the line of... 'suggestive themes' to say the least.

I don't think it's fair to say it's the parents responsibility in this case when they aren't even aware of its adult content. My friend and her husband have check webtoon content in 2016 when they downloaded it for their young daughter, they check the ratings of this app regularly and since it's always teen they trusted the google guidelines. Why is it their fault and not webtoon for not following the guidelines? I'm not asking webtoon to have perfect rating but an honest one that can make people aware of what to expect.

It sounds like they're not really involved. Chances are their kids have watched plenty of movies with sexual content and they just don't know about it.

If i see a "teen" rating, I would assume it has the same guidelines as PG13. I don't care what the other thing says, because let's be honest here, if you're too lazy to look at the app itself, you're too lazy to look up and memorize the exact guidelines.

Then when I consider what is allowed at PG movies (Uhh Barbarella for one pops into mind) and what is allowed for PG13, I feel like most parents should know one of 2 things- either that ratings can't 100% be trusted, or this is to be expected for TEEN rating.

So if you as a parent really care about this topic that much, then it's on you to monitor it.
