I love this book, and I especially love chapter one, Settler. Chapter two, Waypoint? Not so much. There were absolutely no stakes, a lot of exposition, and many characters I didn't quite connect with, and didn't care about.
Collector is awesome, funny, dynamic and a great character. Unfortunately in Waypoint he leaves us with Joana and Halon, who both have no motivation beyond exposition. I thought I was going to learn more about Halon in this chapter, but even after revealing his clothing style, brief history, and interactions, he is still coming across very flat. Who is he and what does he want? He just seems perpetually uncomfortable. Joana is not shining through yet either. I wanted more emotion, more drama. Even through exposition.
You tease a little plot when Collector walks through the streets and is being watched. This whole chapter would have been better if that threat was there from the beginning. It would have made the long, drawn-out process of talking, buying clothes, and more talking very tense and nerve-wracking. Even moreso when Collector leaves those two alone! There needed to be some sort of motivating action from each of these characters. I lost interest until the end of this chapter.
But Collector is a great character, and has made me laugh out loud several times. I'll keep following this comic, but only if the people surrounding him are as dynamic as he is. They don't have to be funny, but more reactive and less passive.
Great work, my friend. Just keep the stakes high, even through exposition, and you've got a loyal fan.
