Making a deliberately hateable character

Like Dolores Umbridge, Urien is small, everyday banal evil given power. So Umbridge, she evokes the bullying teacher or nurse, who hides her nastiness in soft femininity and concern trolling

that's an interesting tip, sometimes an awful everyday person can resonate reader's "hate senses" better.
In the end the power didn't change them, it only allowed them to reveal their selfish nature further.

Love that description ......met some folks like that back in the day. Luckily never had to work with them for long.

I deliberately set up Sarin to be a sympathetic character so that the audience would feel really angry at his terrible treatment of her.

That's a smart move. Sometimes what it takes to make a character despicable is for them to hurt a character the audience loves.

I have one character (so far) that is meant to be hated, now this depends on their motives for doing bad thing (not saying every bad thing is forgivable because it isn't), also show how that characters actions made your likeable characters feel, for example mine is total trash to main cast so i'm expecting everyone to hate him when their backstory is shown

One character that instantly got reader's hate in my case was an old man, who continuously kept on complaining about the MC and it's subtly implied he used physical violence towards him. Also his design was supposed to point out how the character is a grumpy snob with little regard to others' feelings.

The other one I made that I don't think readers like much is a typical Mean Ex-Girfriend .

Sometimes I can't help but like characters that meant to be hated rather than the good guys or designated victim, because of this reason. Also, in some cases the fact that the author obviously favor a character (often the MC) is annoying to me and makes me have negative bias towards them.

Well I´m just starting and this may sound stupid and obvious but I believe if the author feels hatred or just doesn´t like certain character the readers would also probably hate ´em too! : D

and omg this is so complicated to say but talking about villains they do count with their motives or reasons of why they do the things they do and well if it is right on their own judgement they do it, and I believe they shouldn´t work to just be against the protagonist all the time and be bad just because they should have more goals beyond being against the protagonist?

I´m not a professional writter but it´s good if characters have other functions more than just their goal in the plot even the extra ones! (something I gotta work tbh xd)

Even sometimes the hero can be also the villain which I think is kinda interesting (because you know what they say your worst enemy is yourself!)
and there´s even stories that do not count with a villain who could be threat to humanity
just a place where all go by their own and do either good or bad things (neutral like us i think)

and well this far of a hateable or dislikeable character I only have an abusive parent in the story who also impacts one of the mcs
(which sadly is a very common case in life but writting something like this isn´t easy either since I must show the perspective of the victim which is the child who has to deal with him)

Making a hatable character isn’t hard. They screw the MC over ONCE and everyone jumps on the “I hate them” train. The real trick is to make a character everyone LOVES to hate. Joffrey was a monster no one wanted to stick around, whose scenes are PAINFUL to rewatch. Umbridge is a delight, start to finish.
