βAvalor?β he smiles humorously, taking notice of the lit candle. βDid you light this just now?β I turn my attention back to the lone candle sitting at my window sill. Itβs still flickering.
βThe candle?β I repeat, considering in my head if itβs worth confessing or lying about.
βYes,β he nods, seemingly bewildered, βI canβt fathom it would have stayed lit past the night.β Confess it is.
βOf course not,β I concur egregiously, βI merely lit it this morning.β Judging by his expression, I can tell neither response would have sufficed in my attempt to persuade him.
βUpon broad daylight?β he asks curiously.
βI-It was dark,β I affirm, with a straight face. βWhen I awoke, that is,β I quickly clarify.
βOf course,β he halfheartedly agrees, before turning to further examine the candle, βthough, it is strangeβ¦β Reaching for the trayβs handle, he raises it between us. βLook here, Avalor, itβs as though ash has pooled around its center.β Yes, it would appear I couldnβt exactly remove it from the hot wax. βDid you happen to take notice of this,β he prods, βwhen you lit it, that is?β His recycling of my words puts me at unease, cluing me into his suspicion.
βI canβt say I hadnβt thought it was strange,β I offer, with an innocent pouting of my lips.
