New(ish) Writer In Need Of Help (how did you promote your stories?)

Writers, for both comics and novels (but focusing on novels), how did/do you promote your stories?
I was discussing with some people and they all had their own way of promoting their novel/comic. So I wanted to get a general idea of how writers usually do this

• I promoted both internally through forums and externally on other social media platforms.
• I promoted strictly internally through forums, discussions, updating regularly and interacting with other writers.
• I promoted strictly externally on platforms like Tumblr, Reddit, Discord and Twitter
• I didn't promote much, with time my comic/novel gained popularity

I've been advised to do both internal and external promotions. I'm on holidays for now so I want to REALLY dedicate my time to active and effective promotion and building my own mini community

I will give my advice. Whether you like it or not will be at your own discretion, since it is largely based upon my own personal experience. If you really want people to pay attention to your story, then I am afraid you’ll have to fight for every scrap of attention you get. As long as it doesn’t involve AI or Wikipedia (Jimmy Wales’ pet project can go to hell), do whatever it takes to get the attention of the whole world. Promote on social media if you have to and if it works, it works. Make a TV Tropes page if possible.

You will also have to adopt some kind of advertising guff to really ensure people notice your work - gimmicks, snazzy taglines and all that stuff. Thankfully, living in a consumerist society means there are plenty of advertisements all over the place from which one can draw inspiration. As long as you try and ensure that people think your work is better and more popular than it already is, then it’s guaranteed to work.

The forums are mostly people who promote internally so I expect you'll have more of those. I promoted exclusively externally for the first year and both internally and externally for the second year.

Honestly if you're planning to post a novel I would suggest a different platform. I used to promote on the forums and I have an insta account. Tapas just isn't novel focused. And the place is so saturated with one kind of comic even the comic writers have some trouble. I'm finishing the posting on book 1 for my few subscribers and then I'm changing platforms.
