People and Your Face

This is mostly because it happened to me and I guess I'm just hoping I'm not the only one in this boat.

If you've ever shared what you actually look like, did people seem to suddenly act differently towards you? I've always been kind of a certain user in comments on the site and forums. I'm sarcastic, pessimistic, an asshole really. But, no one ever batted an eye. In fact I'm somehow friends with some well-known artists.

BUT

Because I was getting popular-ish, once for a couple weeks I decided to use a real picture of me instead of my commissioned avatars for the sake of connecting to fans because I'm a real person. I dunno. Dumbass reasons.

Anyway, when I had my real face up, suddenly everything I said was offensive to folks. I would get comment replies about how I needed to calm down or that I should just stay quiet and it was really strange because no one had ever reacted to me in such a way... when I had a drawn avatar.

So, I guess the question is, anyone apparently have an offensive look to them? Or am I the only one who looks like garbage?

Yes, yes, many times yes. And the people that do it come off as really unprofessional. I've gotten it when I've being nice. Which is most of the time.

That's very interesting, especially considering how few people share their actual faces.

I've always like seeing other people's face and have never been shy about sharing me own so I wouldn't really know but that's a shame if seeing your real face truly does cause some people to be less courteous.

I mean I wont state their name, but can you imagine if artists that trashed me once I showed my face were premium? If they trashed me like they did on discord, I wouldn't want to give them money. I already have to deal with that kind of immaturity on Twitter. I'm just not here for that.

My fans found a picture of me once. (I guess a site I auto logged in for face book used a facebook photo and I didn't realize (wasn't an avatar or anywhere too obvious, you had to dig for it)

I will never be able to live sleep well at night anymore from all the horrible, threatening, creepy or generally completely unwanted comments I got.

Never listening to my cousins when they complain about my facebook avatar not being a picture of me ever again.

most of the time people get shocked I'm black, ( especially if they can't tell my logo is an afro puff and not a pineapple) if they are talking to me they change the way the phrase things. it's annoying when I'm dm'ing someone. then i get a random message "OMG YOU'RE BLACK????" I'm like no I'm caramel.

i guess it's what people are used to looking at. Although, I have a branding icon. I expose what I look like to everyone that follows my other social media sites or Youtube every now and then. Honestly, I don't look much different from my avatar!

For me it started happening when I changed my avatar from thumb drives on a paper plate to just my face. Not ure if that's a branding thing or what.

As far as assholism, trust me I'll let you know if you're being one. And I probably wouldn't use words so rude, uneducated, and not constructive in the least.

Mixed reactions. I've always gotten shit for the way I look one way or another so I wear my face and style with pride these days and don't really care what people think of it.

When I was in my teens I would be called ugly by the whole school and town. Online I was called jailbait and old men flirted with me and harrassed, manipulated or guilted me in hopes of me showing my tits to them.

Nowadays it's still mixed reactions. When I have my face as a profile pic on tapas I get more fans trying to bang me, and on the other hand fellow creators hate me more for some reason. Dunno what it is but maybe I just have the kind of face people want to punch.
It's whatever, I put whatever fits my mood as my icon and people can judge however they want. It's their worrywarts growing over it, not mine.

A lot of times yeah. Because I'm always the gender that they least expect or they harass me because I dont want to reveal it XD Its a toss up but I stopped doing it.

Pff I never show my real face! People are weird, creepy, you never know what they'll do. They may hunt you down and stalk you, and even though I know it's possible for someone to get your info regardless of if you post anything or not I'd rather make them work for it. Also what you create really has nothing to do with you, so there's no point in posting pics outside of pining for attention... I have noticed a lot of creators use themselves as reference, most of the time their characters have really similar if not carbon copies of the creator's features.
Coincidentally I do have photos of myself on Facebook, but all my info is fake and only family follow me. If I were to post pics elsewhere there would have to be a really good reason. I did post a pic once on Twitter for a creator vs. creation thing, but deleted it a few hours afterwards. In that time I literally had no reactions, which was nice, I don't think I left the pic up long enough to for people to see it.

Regarding people reacting your to. People are douchebags, they have certain expectations and if you don't meet their standards they'll treat you like crap. Don't think too much into it, if they got a problem they could shove it.

I show my face sometimes, yes on facebook, rarely on social media. I've done it for the art v. artist thing, and I've shown my face partially before.
Never received much of a reaction or change in follower behavior.
Though I showed my internet friends on discord a selfie of myself and an overwatch v.a. and they said I was cute.

I think myself to have a resting-bitch-face, but I'm asian so people perceive it as less threatening? I do try to smile at least a little for the pics I share outside of fb.

I very much look like a 36 year old double-mom (the word "dumplin'" comes to mind) so whenever people finally see my face they become very indulgent. Like "oh your new hair color looks so pretty! :D" because that's about the only thing you could sincerely compliment about my physical appearance these days hehe

So for me it works out ok because people no longer talk to me in a flirty manner when they realize I'm "Mommy AF." But I'm sure they also cease thinking of me as at all intriguing and hence possibly, as being no longer worth their time anymore. It's then when I lose anyone who was enjoying my art because "I'm a chick" and only hold onto the people who actually dug the art in the first place.

People tend to create an image of person who's writing or drawing. So, when they see a real face that does not match with their expectations they get freaked out...
And that's what I'm saying when someone asks me to show face (happened on a few game forums):

Don't worry about that. It's just when someone's writing fantasy most people think of one's image as of Prachett/Tolkien/Martin. It's not your problem, so just don't give a damn about that Continue doing what you like! For you're doing it great!
