Anyone else with PG13 comics get their comics removed from the app? I don't consider my comic52 R-rated, and I just got the email saying it was removed. In my case, I'm certain it was violence rather than explicit sexual content cause I got none of that.

The email included an invitation to talk to the staff for clarification and potential editing help. While that's nice, I don't consider it possible to water down my work (worth noting, the email acknowledged such possibilities respectfully).

No resentment toward the Tapas staff, as they're not the ones who thought my comic was Too Evil for Young Eyes. I'm not upset at at the staff. Heck, I'm not even upset at Apple. Doesn't mean I'm comfortable with the situation. I just feel like a star-shaped person being pushed out of a tunnel that suddenly changed its shape and won't accommodate the pointy tips of my star shape.

so... its a good thing to not be popular now so our comics wont be removed... gotcha

... i'll be honest, the respect i had for tapas was low to begin with but now if they are removing comics for petty things, i might have to leave

Like I said, it's not their fault. I don't agree with the decision, and for all we know, the staff might not agree with it either. They just can't do much about it.

Oh deer, that's not good since I definitely consider my comic to be rated PG-13. It's mainly for more serious topics and swearing (like "shit") but that's about it. There's barely any violence and no sexual content at all. I'm guessing @keii4ii your comic was removed for nudity? If I recall correctly you censored the nasties but maybe that was why. Anyway I hope your comic gets put back up.

My guess is it's the violent scenes, actually. There are at least two scenes where violent deaths are shown, not just implied.

And thanks! :heart:ļøŽ Times like this, feeling wanted in the community means a lot to me.

Apple does not allow NSFW/Porn. It’s why there’s no Newgrounds app nor a pornhub app. It’s their OS so they can do what they want with it. The only other competition is Google and they’re pretty strict too. If people dont want to comply then their app gets removed from the IOS store. Sadly a lot of people have IPhones and it seems Tapas built up its app so much that they don’t want to let it go. Therefore they’re forced to comply.

I dont care if my comics is not for the Apple app, as long as it can stay on the site. I have stuck by this site through thick and thin and it is the only home for my comics. I'm just at the point where im starting to sell comics and without that I will have to stop and go back to another way of living.
making comics for a living was meant to be fun, funny how these greedy big business types keep f'ing it up for people whom don't even effect them.

if struggling and being with very little money is your thing it's great. but the up side is not having a boss and you always have that hope something will kick in and take off for you.

Wow. I just opened the Tapas app and found a lot of my favorite comics removed. Some of which are incredibly tame. But these comic are still available on webtoon. Are tapas using a different apple ios store than webtoon or what’s exactly going on?

If I have to guess. It’s not the app store this time. It’s probably the ad provider requirements since tapas allows everyone to turn ad revenue from the get go unlike webtoon who have to approve it first.

I don’t know I just don’t like what’s happening specially since it’s happening to already very tuned down comics.

Edit: I mean. Go to the BL genre, sort by popular and have a drink every time you click on a comic and it tells you it’s not available. Now the BL genre seems useless ā€˜-ā€˜

Is there a reason why there aren't other app stores available? Why does it seem to be only Google and Apple stores? Why no app stores for mature content?

I don't get it. I have an app specifically for playing mobile games so I don't see why there couldn't be other store apps.

Because there’s really only androids and IPhones. Google has android and and Apple for its IPhone. Since they're in control of the phones they decided to take complete control of the apps allowed in it.

It’s not that someone doesn’t want to make a new App Store. It’s more of they’d have to make their own phone, get people to actually buy the product, and convince people to make apps for it. Sadly, you know people won’t buy a phone they don’t recognize and just call it a Chinese knock off. So people aren’t gonna want to buy a brand they’ve never heard of and will have less features compared to androids and iPhones. Competition is far below to where no one can really climb up this ladder and is forcing everyone to follow the rules or to get out.

I guess what I’m trying to say is...:sparkles:Monopolyā„¢:sparkles:.

Yeah, they were sent things from Apple which caused manual removing, but the regulations from Apple are so goddamn vapid and indistinct and focused on certain tags that they're essentially removing shit that have a 1/100 chance of causing a negative effect on the app, when works like mine, which probably would have to be removed, but go under the radar since growth is so small and updates are so inconsistent.

Yeah, I never expected this to happen to HoK... but I guess life is full of surprises.

Some people thought it might've been in error. I suppose that is a possibility, but right now I'm too drained to even ask if that is the case. o(-<

Is deviantart available on IOS? They also have stuff on that should up the rating, especially since some people don't even tag mature work as mature. If deviantart is okay, then why Tapas shouldn't?

From what I looked up, yes, it’s on the IOS. Why it’s allowed? I don’t have an answer. I don’t know if things are censored there as well since I’ve never used the app but it is available on the App Store.

I’m also not editing my works to become more viewable. I’ve noticed that it hasn’t slowed down my growth on my novel, so that’s good.

That's what I thought. After all the situation with Deviantart is pretty similar to Tapas, there is optional content that can be mature, there are options to tag works as mature and some people simply censor stuff. Deviantart is a bigger site so I'm not really surprised that they have money to get away with this, but it is still sad

What???
It can’t be that the Apple team is actually reading ALL comics on the entire site... That would be.. Too big a job.
There must be some tags they are looking for?

@keii4ii what tags do you have?

I don't know, maybe "shiny" is too sexual for them.

EDIT: I don't think it's the tags for my series. If I'm understanding this correctly, comics that get blocked due to tags don't get notified. Only comics that get blocked due to actual content issues are notified. I could be wrong, though.

OMG this is insane?
So what guidelines do we have?
How do we know what to do or not to do?

Maybe they used content filters to massively scan bunch of comics. I'm gonna be honest, I don't know if a thing like this exist already, but...

Do you remember when Article 13 was being discussed and they said they conten uploaded to the internet would be filtered whether it contains copyright material? Now, they probably have something similar in place, like face recognition but instead it catches censored body parts, blood, people naked and stuff? Obviously it wouldn't be 100% correct all the time, but I don't think they would care.

They would probably get you deleted for using phrase "I'm naked" haha

I heard back from two different staff members. HoK got blocked because my male characters have visible body hair in the lower abdomen region.

While it would be a simple edit to make, I'm not going to do it. It's extremely important to me that my characters are portrayed the way they are, warts and all, both emotionally and physically. And body hair is often omitted because it's considered "ugly." I am letting my characters be their "ugly" selves. Muffin tops, body hair, huge disproportionate thighs, all of that stuff.

I don't agree with the staff/Apple decision, because you see this level of hair on men wearing family-friendly swim trunks. But at the same time... I understand they had to draw the line somewhere. And when lines are drawn, no matter how good the intentions, there's always a few unfortunate souls who get screwed. I'm one of those souls this time.

Worth mentioning, one of the two emails came from someone who had no obligation to reach out to me. His words were extremely thoughtful. While this whole situation really blows, that thoughtfulness means a lot to me, and will be remembered.

You're kidding right? your comic got removed because of body hair?
I'm sorry I can't understand this.

I feel our blame is misplaced here by blaming apple because, If you have on your phone any app that lets you post photos like pinterest for instance. just search for "shirtless men" and enjoy all those men with hair under their abdominal region.

Also I did some search into apple policy from their website.
Developers can rate their apps into 4 different age ratings.

Tapas is rated 17+ yet you literally can't have anything allowed in the 17+ category?

And looking back on the infamous 1.1.4 policy from apple:

1.1.4 Overtly sexual or pornographic material, defined by Webster’s Dictionary as "explicit descriptions or displays of sexual organs or activities intended to stimulate erotic rather than aesthetic or emotional feelings."

Link: https://developer.apple.com/app-store/review/guidelines/#objectionable-content2

So excuse me when I say that this purge that's happening on tapas doesn't make any sense.

If this is seriously a problem for Tapas why don't they make use of the:

Unrestricted web access, such as with an embedded browser

Instead of the message that says just go look for the comic on the website?
Also why most of the wecomics removed on Tapas' 17+ are still allowed on Webtoons 12+ app.

Just think about it.

WOW what the actual hell??
It's nice Tapas told you specifically what Apple had an issue with though!
But really??? DAMN …

I haven't gotten an e-mail for my series (yet), but like the only difference I can think of is your art is in full color and rendered while mine's in black and white with no real shading …

Kudos for sticking to your guns! I too am a proponent for hairy guys (and gals) so I would keep it in as well.

what the ffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffccccccccccccccccccckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

Okay. My comic is going to get screwed eventually.

This is actually getting pretty scary if you think about it. The only reason I can imagine they would ban your comic for lower abdomen hair is because they believe it will lead the reader's mind further down the happy trail to the genital region.

This mentality was common a few hundred years ago. People were required to cover their genitals and nipples because sexuality was sinful. Then they had to cover thighs, belly and chest because those were all areas that people believed would remind people of the "sinful regions".
Then people were required to cover arms, lower legs, wrists and ankles because these were all body parts that they believed would lead the mind to the bodyparts nearby, which would lead the mind to the "sinful regions".

It's very dangerous thinking and more often than not it aimed to silence womens sexuality. The prude wave we see going on online right now does this too. It attacks sites and content that is aimed at women and the lgbt, or contains characters thereof, shutting out more and more content under the excuse of it being "too sexual", while straight up pornographic content aimed at cis men is as easily obtainable as ever.

Big brother Apple wants us to cover our ankles to diminish the slightest thought of sin.

This is such a silly reason to block a comic. If it were about my characters I wouldn't change a thing too. Our characters are designed the way WE want them to look and not to appeal to some age restrictions on an app dictated by a big company.

Ankles? I've drawn a guy exposing his calves. Am I going to Apple hell? :fearful:

Damn, now I don't even know if I should bother posting my comic on either site. Considering what is it about I have no idea where would I post it to not get deleted ugh.

Honestly every time I'm reading some comic I just can't shake off the feeling that the author had to hold themselves back a lot. Like the main heroes are fighting the unimaginable foes and shit hits the fan but god forbid someone says "shit" or "oh fuck". I know it's not the fault of the creator, but still, it just takes a lot of enjoyment of the comic away  Maybe it's just me, but I can't really enjoy clean comics like that, unless the fact that they're clean is part of the comic premise.

Keep in mind it's not getting deleted, it's being blocked on the apple app.

And to the whole what about webtoons thing? Well... last I saw the stats were significantly larger than tapas so maybe they can pay? Or they are already harder on the ban hammer normally? Cause I remember people saying how Tapas was easier.
