This morning, an artist I watch on DeviantArt posted a comic for the first time (that I know of). It was just a funny short story, 11 pages long. But what surprised me the most was that it was so...sweet~
The pictures they post are more 'cartoon creepy': lots of dark humor, monstrous creatures, torture scenes, blood, mild gore (it's not as bad as it sounds; their art is adorable XD). And the comic did have some of those elements in it, but the interactions between the characters were very lighthearted, and the rhythm of the story was a sort of 'anime-style reactionary' (characters & jokes bounce from one subverted expectation to the next). It wasn't what I was expecting at all, and I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would (their other watchers seemed to like it too; I hope they do more in the future~).
And that got me to thinking about the difference between the art people post versus the sorts of comics they create. Unfortunately, I don't watch many artists who do comics (and even fewer who do comics that I particularly enjoy)...just about the only other person I can think of is me.
I'm kind of the opposite of the aforementioned dArtist. ^^ My pictures are rather mild and unassuming...I mostly do character designs, tbh. And when I do draw situations, they're usually just cute and funny or sad and melancholy. Gentle things.
My comics, on the other hand, are where I indulge in that HEAVY DRAMA. Sharper humor, sadder sadness, more violent violence! Situational INTENSITY!
I'd love to do more standalone art that's dynamic like that, but for some reason I just...don't. Thus, the dichotomy...
