Many of the patterns are done without planning unless it's a replication, being free with the design is easier. I think you just need to zoom, use the right brush setting, be patient, and ensure you approach the pattern making methodically to ensure balance between parts of same pattern. Truth is, I make finer details because on the big picture, if you mess up it won't be as noticeable
I honestly have no idea how that kind of clothes would work IRL. I think it would be a combination of dyeing, weaving, and patchworking.
I have designed a blazer for my class (which came out really different from what I designed). Other than that I don't think I can design normal clothes that isn't embarrassing to wear.
