“So you find it fun to kill people you’d otherwise never get close to without your power? Is that it? Is that why you corrupted Richard? To watch chaos unfold due to your involvement?”

The Shroud threw his head back with a delighted laugh, clutching his chest.

“Corrupted him? Me? Oh no, no, no!” he said between chuckles. “He was already deliciously dark when I found him. Just… unrefined. I simply couldn’t allow that. As a fellow murder enthusiast, I just had to help him blossom to his full potential!”

The term made Lena’s stomach churn.

And for Dog Familiar, here is the excerpt:

“Do you really expect me,” he said, each word deliberate and biting, “to just let threats to my students waltz into my school and take away a danger I promised to the King of the Beastmen? Is that truly what you expect of me?”

The venom in his tone hit harder than any spell. Morwen winced, visibly wounded, her tail curling around her as if to shield herself.

“She can’t help her nature,” Morwen whispered, almost to herself. Then louder: “None of us can. Haven’t you ever done something you regretted instantly?”

Helion exhaled a long, weary sigh, lowering his chin. “Enough,” he snapped, voice reverberating through the false sea. “No matter what you say, no matter how much you beg, I will not allow you—or anyone else—to touch Decato. I won’t let you go until one of us can no longer stand. Only one of us walks away from this in one piece.”
