Jordan swallowed, his throat burning as he fought to call out to his son. Finally, he couldn’t take it any more. The pain of seeing his oldest, the one who had been nothing more than a distant memory in the backs of their minds, tore through his chest.
“Lukas,” he said, more to himself than anything. “Lukas…” He took a step forward, his feet feeling like they were dragging through sand. “Lukas…” His voice continued to get louder but Strannick and the rest didn’t stop. “Lukas!” he called out one last time.
Kas gritted his teeth, his fists clenched as his chin trembled. Noah slid both hands over his.
“STRANNICK!”
Everyone slowly came to a stop, Kas raising his head in surprise and turning just in time to see Chloe running at him, tears flying off her face. He gulped and Noah stepped aside.
“Chlo—”
Chloe threw herself into his arms, her arms wrapped tightly around his neck as she sobbed. Stunned, Kas stood there frozen, not fully comprehending what was going on. Shouldn’t she be screaming at him? Cursing his name?
“You…came home…” she wailed, her grip tightening.
The tears broke free from Kas’ eyes, falling silently down his cheeks as his arms slowly wrapped themselves around his sister.
“Ch-Chloe?” he choked out. “I thought…”
“Shut up, stupid!” she cried. “You’re so stupid! You’re an idiot and your stupid and I hate how ... stupid you are!”
A laugh burst through his tears as he hugged her tight, his face going into her neck. “Yeah, I get it. You can use a different term now.”
